1998 Mitsubishi Shogun GLS 3.0 petrol

Summary:

No car, possibly no machine, is better made

Faults:

Absolutely nothing.

General Comments:

Astonishingly reliable. Much newer Mercs and BMWs just don't compare in reliability. These are generally constructed like heavy duty machinery - they genuinely last an entire lifetime.

For a nearly 3 tonne 1998 machine, amazing acceleration - the 24v V6 shames an awful lot of performance cars. Very good MPG for the weight of the car, for the petrol engine, as good as the diesel Shogun. Handling superb because of multilink suspension.

I paid £1200 for this 4x4 - it has never, never, not once, failed in any way, despite some 20,000 miles. Over a lifetime's motoring I've owned over 50 different makes of vehicle - was not even aware that a car can be manufactured to this high a standard so that it never fails - aeroplanes are probably not made or assembled with such exacting precision. Bravo Mitsubishi - how do you make any money in aftersales and replacement parts???

Absolutely agree. I have had a 1998 V6 petrol auto Shogun for nearly 12 years - 5 oil and filter changes in 18 years - covered almost 200,000 hard miles - hasn't seen a mechanic or need any kind of fixing in 12 years. Every other car just seems like a breakable child's toy after this. I've had Land Rovers as well - they are little more than pretty Montegos on stilts.

1998 Mitsubishi Shogun 3.0

Summary:

A luxurious fuel-thirsty, excellent towing vehicle, only worth buying if really needed.

Faults:

The driver's door lock doesn't accept the key.

The exhaust manifold blew at 45000 miles.

The air conditioning leaks and has to be refilled each Summer.

The near side, rear anti-roll link bar has had to be replaced.

General Comments:

An excellent towing vehicle. We regularly tow a horse box with two horses and there is no problem.

The automatic transmission is superb in heavy traffic.

The interior is hard wearing and luxurious.

I'm having a lot of problems with the dashboard electronics in my 1998 GLS V6 3500. The handbrake Light stays on all the time. The 4x4 indicating lights flash off and on and one has gone altogether. Apart from these problems mine has been a dream. They are a star to drive.

I have just bought a 2.5 diesel Animal I would appreciate contact with other users, as it looks like I have a few problems with minor electrics like mirrors and cigarette lighter.

If you have the older kidney shaped key fobs and a factory fitted alarm, then you should be able to get them replaced at any Mitsubishi dealership as I had to a couple of years ago but they cost about £25.00 each at the time. They need your car to "pair" the fobs to your alarm though.

Failing that you might get away with using the little black short pen shaped devices which are designed to disable the immobiliser should your fob fail. Your immobiliser automatically disables your car after 45 seconds if you don't turn your engine on after opening the car as I'm sure you are aware.
