1986 Nissan Micra 1.0L 16v

Summary:

Great first car; small, reliable, and cheap to run

Faults:

At about 80000 miles changed air flow meter, around 100€.

At around 87000 miles, clutch brake.

General Comments:

This was my first car and I loved it.

Was OK on petrol; about 7-8 in the city, and 5-6 on the motorway.

Good handling, good observation, great for a learner.

Not very powerful, but can be squeezed a bit if no passengers are carried.

This car is best for city and short trips, I find it uncomfortable for long drives, the seats have very little adjustment, and the shape of them is odd for my taste.

1986 Nissan Micra Collette 988cc

Summary:

Fantastic bargain banger

Faults:

Passenger seat replaced due to fat friend.

Rear shock absorber replaced.

Brake disc's and pads.

General Comments:

This is a basic car, but very reliable.

Handles well for the age of the car.

I paid very little for it and have had to pay very little since.

Prone to non-structural corrosion.

1986 Nissan Micra Collette 1.0 petrol

Summary:

Cheap, surprising, keeps on going

Faults:

Brake calipers jammed twice

Brake discs had to be replaced

Cracked headlamp (probably my fault)

Certain joints rust easily (see all Colettes - all have the same points rusted!)

Petrol filler tube had to be replaced - is directly above rear passenger wheel, so water and muck is sprayed up at it.

General Comments:

Okay, Nissan Micra - the hairdressers car. It isn't fast (supposedly), isn't flash, and in a number head-on collisions with a Series 2 Land Rover (my parents vehicle) the Land Rover has yet to lose.

However, for a driver like me - careful, yet young and liking a bit of fun - it is good.

Petrol consumption is excellent, and although I have had quite a few things repaired on it over the year I've had it, it is around sixteen years old.

The acceleration in first and second is very good, and although I've probably wrecked the gearbox, I have left many faster cars standing at the traffic lights. If you keep the car nice and empty, and with no passengers particularly, the handling is excellent also.

One point with the four-speed gear box (not including reverse) is that by the time you're going past seventy you could really do with a fifth gear.

The security is not great. The steering lock can be easily snapped, and the door can be bent back so that an intruder and reach in and unlock the door (this happened to me). But providing they don't get away with it some good shoving and pushing in the right points by two people will snap the door right back into place.

1986 Nissan Micra DX 988cc

Summary:

Fantastic, cheap little "Super-mini"

Faults:

Vacuum tubes deteriorated at 73500 miles. Replaced easily and quickly.

Choke problems (at one point she was running on the choke all the time resulting in a very thirsty engine!)

Exhaust has gone once while I have owned her and three times before that.

Very squeaky and irritating windscreen-wiper which has resisted every attempt to be silenced!

Timing needs adjustment at every service.

General Comments:

Fantastic little runabout!

Heating system is excellent... she heats up to normal temperature from cold in around 4 minutes (7 minutes in winter)

For a small engine, she has quite a kick. She cruises happily at 70mph, but get fussy when asked to do anything more.

Fuel economy is ridiculously cheap! She will give 60+ mpg on long straight runs at high speeds and approx. 30 mpg around town.

Interior equipment is very sparse, but this should mean less to go wrong, shouldn't it?

One small thing... the heating vents on the dashboard are an awkward shape and fail to hold an 'in-car air-freshener' securely.

Known as "The Boneshaker" to my mum and Gran, she is really fun to drive! And as someone as so rightly said "like a Go-Cart"!
