1986 Nissan Silvia 1.8 turbo

Summary:

Excellent car for its time

Faults:

Have had no problems with this car.

Always starts first time.

Off road now for two years, but still excellent.

Interior faded, but perfect.

Some rust and some small denting.

General Comments:

Handling not perfect, but a smart, reliable motor.

Rubber tailgate moulding deteriorated through standing.

Excellent, smooth ride, and snappy appearance.

Love the looks of the 80s Silvia.

1986 Nissan Silvia 1.8 turbo

Summary:

Bags of old fashioned fun

Faults:

Front driver's side brake caliper seized, easily and cheaply replaced from a local scrap yard.

CV joints replaced.

Replaced the front struts.

General Comments:

Incredibly reliable car, started first time, every time.

Great fun to drive, I had loads of hairy moments going sideways round corners, but it always seemed to compose itself, I think top quality tyres are a must on this car for safety's sake.

My turbo was still going strong after 12 years, this I think is largely due to oil and filter changes every 3000 miles, this is definitely the key to long turbo life.

1986 Nissan Silvia ET 1.8 turbo

Summary:

Pound for pound you won't get a faster car

Faults:

Starting problems - engine floods.

Mystery misfire that after stripping down the engine and rebuilding continued and one day disappeared.

General Comments:

Very quick for its age. Did a twin fan conversion, using parts from a Ford Granada. Works very well.

Next project is to update the dash and seats.

1986 Nissan Silvia ZX Turbo 1.8 turbo

Summary:

Cheap thrills

Faults:

Turbo gasket blown - replacement part cost £15 and £35 to fit.

Battery replaced.

General Comments:

This car looks mean.

It's not that fast compared to modern cars - but it does look like it can deliver the goods.

The handling took a while to get used to, and on long runs (3hrs +) you get numb bum.

But it starts first time every time.

It's going because someone decided to re-design the front wing and it's a write off!!!
