1995 Nissan Sunny DX or DLX 2.0 diesel

Summary:

Abused minger, faithful to the end!

Faults:

This car never ever broke down despite a serious lack of maintenance and servicing. It only ever went into the garage for an MOT once a year. I never received a bill for more than £100 except on its last MOT when it needed some welding on the sills (both sides).

I never even changed the oil, and only topped it up when every 5000 miles or so the pressure light would start to flicker.

The radiator fluid never ran down.

Diesel and windscreen wash only for over 80,000 miles.

This car was properly idiot proof, and I'm a proper idiot.

General Comments:

This car was so dull that I can't recall anything about it other than I used to arrive at places with no memory of my journey. It was the most soulless rot box of a car ever. However, as time passed, and despite my lack of interest in servicing, I noticed my bank balance increasing. So slowly as we spent more time together, I grew to love the sluggish grey lump. My wife even gave her a name, Ghita.

Just as I was considering paying for a service and possibly even a new timing belt, disaster struck. The nearside back shock absorber detached itself from the rusty interior of the boot and Ghita was dead. (Fortunately I survived the incident without a blemish) I wish I'd treated her right and let our love blossom instead of abusing her for all those years. (Just once a year to the car wash might had given her another 20,000 miles)

Even in death Ghita was a winner and I received £140 scrap money.

P.S.

Ran well on cooking oil (sieve the lumps out half and half with diesel).

56mpg best, 52mpg worst.

Tyres, brake pads, wipers, all dirt cheap.

Honestly: nothing ever broke!

Agree totally. Best car ever if you just want your car to work and cost nothing.

1995 Nissan Sunny Preview 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Cheap and reliable!

Faults:

Hmmmm, nothing so far!

General Comments:

This car is the most reliable car ever. You cannot get a better car of the same value.

The engine is smooth, and the gear box is just perfect.

The only problem it has is the steering. It's not a power steering car, so while parking and performing three point turns, you can face difficulties.

1995 Nissan Sunny LX 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Best car I have ever owned

Faults:

No faults.

General Comments:

I purchased the car from a friend, and when I purchased it, there was very minor accident damage. I had the parts for nothing from his brother who owns a Nissan workshop. Two back shocks were also needed, and a spare wheel.

The performance is great, but is a little gutless at lower revs. Fuel consumption is fantastic, returning up to 46 MPG at motorway speeds. The only work that was needed for the annual MOT, was to change a tyre on the rear that was worn on the inner edge, due to a worn shock.

The engine is leak free and is totally reliable, and has never given any trouble to date.

The boot could do with being a bit bigger, but is OK when the split folding rear seats are put down.

The only let down with the car are the price of dealer parts, but overall it never seems to need fixing on a regular basis, so it's a cheap car to run. I particularly like the 9000 mile oil change, but it is recommended to use high quality semi synthetic 10w/30 or 40 oil.

1995 Nissan Sunny 1.6 SR 1.6 petrol

Summary:

An under powered slug

Faults:

The clutch has gone several times.

The head gasket had to be replaced at 80,000 miles.

Jumped out of fifth gear.

Both drive shafts went after a night of wheel spinning.

Electric windows have stopped twice.

General Comments:

I was highly disappointed with the performance. My previous car which was a KIA pride went just as well. When you see a 205 G.T.I. come up behind just pull over even if it's a 1.6. Also beware of metro's, they are probably faster. All though this car is nothing performance wise it is quite reliable. Nissan really do let down the Japanese.

If your looking for a family car it's great, otherwise don't buy it.

You must have bought some broken 1.6SR the right one is quite impressive car in terms of performance. At least no Golf GTI could have a chance against it, not speaking for some wicked Peugeot. :-)

My Sunny SR is fine, no problems whatsoever.

It's not slow, I raced a Vectra 2.5 V6 automatic the other day, and for a 1 mile race, he got about 20 yards from me. I get 120 in 4th, so you can't exactly say they're slow.

My sunny is very quick, but the engine blew up. So not very quick at the moment LOL.

I've got a Pulsar XLR; similar to a Sunny SR, but a lot rarer... 1.6 110bhp standard, and anyone talking 180mph is on some kind of drug... there's over 180km/h on the clock, and it will do this in 4th gear. The Sunny SR had head gasket and gearbox troubles; they are commonly known for it I'm afraid e.g. 5th gear popping out etc. When looked after, they're a good little car, but my advice buy an XLR if you can find one ;)
