1985 Opel Monza GSE 3.0

Summary:

After owning many cars, this is the one I adore

Faults:

I have to date had no faults with this car. I just get in and drive, and each time I do, I become more attached.

General Comments:

After owning this car for some months, I feel I should tell you, the general public, that you should go out and find an Opel Monza.

The experience of driving a 3.0 straight six Opel Monza GSE is something all motorists should have the benefit of.

Supremely comfortable Recaro interior, the handling of a go cart, and the smooth power delivery of its 180 BHP.

It is an absolute pleasure to own and drive. Go out and find one.

1985 Opel Monza GSE 3.0 injection

Summary:

Stunning, very quick armchair

Faults:

Many times I had thought about finding an older car to cherish. Then out of the blue I was offered the Opel Monza 3.0 GSE of 1985 vintage in superb condition, I was told, for approx £1000. At the time, I was put off a little by reports of very low MPG so I left it. A couple of months later I was offered the car for £450. The owner had to make room for very expensive kit car project. It was agreed I would buy said car unseen, but a knowing source knew it would be OK.

General Comments:

Stunning example, 20 years old, miniscule amount of rust.

Delightfully comfortable Recaro seating.

Surprisingly quick.

Drives like brand new.

Heater inoperative + a couple of very minor items to fix. MPG is not very good, but overall, who cares, the car is awesome.

1985 Opel Monza GSE 3.0

Summary:

Muscle car. Bye, bye GTi

Faults:

Water pump started to leak, but was relatively easy to replace.

Air Con not working when purchased.

Lots of body work due to rust!

General Comments:

I bought this car from a friend of mine after he showed me a picture of it. I instantly fell in love with it and pestered him for three years until he finally agreed to sell! The car had not been driven for those three years and was in a serious state of disrepair. Running around in cheap small engined cars enabled me to spend more money on my Monza to get it road worthy.

I spent a lot of money in repairing it, but every penny was worth it. The car handles extremely well for its size and weight. The straight six 3 litre engine is smooth and very powerful and although the fuel consumption in town is poor, when you get to motorways it is excellent. 95 mph is only 3000-3500 revs in 5th gear!

It's a pleasure to drive and it's comfort is exceptional. Acceleration is excellent especially in the higher speed ranges. Many a boy racer thinking he owns the road has been taught a lesson after picking on me and my Monza!

I can honestly say I don't want to drive another car. I love the way it looks, fells and sounds. Monza for life!

1984 Opel Monza GSE 3 litre petrol

Summary:

Sorry Jaguar..Grace...Pace...Space!

Faults:

Air conditioning not working, heater fan. Front struts rebuilt with new inner wings. Fuel pipes replaced. Fuel pump replaced. Headlamp wipers not working. Digital Dash dims to zero when sidelights switched on.

General Comments:

This is my second Monza. My sister actually gave me a silver manual GSE 7 years back which was written off by a drunk. It was a stunning car in every respect. Insurance paid for my current white example which I intend to have nut and bolt restored in 3 years. This car is in very fine fettle, and frankly I don't want to drive anything else now. Torque, comfort, design, and engineering quality would be hard to match these days. Fuel consumption is class average, but why bother really when all else is paid for? It costs less per mile to run than my wifes Renault 5 Campus! Dislikes? Few... but fuel pipe leakage is a pain in winter when auto choke is on full chat. Lumpy around town nature of throttle is another, but it is being treated to a rolling road soon.

Likes? Blowing off reverse baseball cap teenagers in tin cans using her 2nd gear party trick of zero to heaven knows what! Sheer grunt, looks, exclusivity, and value and performance/value for money also figure. My boss lets me park it away from the mainstream employee car park right beside his BMW! He has a stakeholder attitude to preserving it too! That's Monza for you... everyone admires them and often ask... what is THAT? What other old GM product gets that reaction in UK?
