1999 Peugeot 306 1.9 diesel

Summary:

Great first car, would recommend

Faults:

Electric windows developed a fault at 102,000m.

Exhaust - Was very expensive to replace.

General Comments:

This was my first car after learning, and it is INCREDIBLY easy to get used to.

Feel quite safe in the car due to responsive brakes and great handling.

Fairly slow, especially top end.

Comfortable interior.

Very roomy inside for hatchback.

1999 Peugeot 306 HDi 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

A good solid estate which is excellent value for money

Faults:

Nothing really. Front tyres, some trim.

General Comments:

I had a 205 before and wanted more room as we have 2 pups. An estate was the obvious choice. The 306 feels smaller than the 405 and much more modern styling.

The standard car is underpowered. It only has 90bhp and that is just not good enough for a diesel estate.

My wife has a 405GLX turbo diesel and that is much better.

To sort the performance problem I had a chip fitted at about £300. It has given the car much more pep when driving and I've actually had the power to overtake things on A roads - where previously I've had to sit behind lorries!

The car is nice to drive. It is very comfortable (especially after a 500 mile trip) and everything is well screwed together. I also like the styling of the car.

It is cheap to fix and service. I had thought about a BMW Touring or Audi Avant, but was put off both of these cars due to high servicing costs.

The only downside I would say is the performance. Even with the chip, it is still a bit gutless. In the 405, we can fly up Holden Hill near Exeter and still be doing 70 at the top, whereas in the 306 I'm doing in 4th gear doing 60!

As for dealers, I've only had one experience of Peugeot main dealers as I tend to use a local independant garage.

Finally, as for Peugeots - I'm very happy to stick with this brand having had about 6 so far. They are easily my favourite manufacturer and we all have Peugeots in the family!

1999 Peugeot 306 Meridian 1.4

Summary:

Bad, would not buy

Faults:

Loads of common faults have gone wrong.

ECU 3 times; £4500.

Gearbox also has a common fault; cost me £550.

Injectors have needed replacing.

Windscreen wipers sensor gone.

Bad vibration occurring when driven (not wheel balancing, had that done).

Selling the car. Have had enough, going to go bankrupt with this thing. Have only done 9000 miles.

General Comments:

Nice car, but you need a good bank balance to keep repairing common faults.

I have had the same problem. Have got a W reg Peugeot 306 1.4 and have had nothing but problems have had two engines, three gearbox's, coil pack, two ECU'S and that annoying vibration after 60 mph; still never got to the bottom of that.

Overall this car is a load of crap. It's easy really, don't buy a FRENCH CAR.

I also have an S reg 306. Only had it for 4 months.

Idle control unit broke down cost £86.

Steering wheel vibrates after 60mph.

My odometer keeps resetting itself, and my air bag light keeps flashing.

Now it looks like my ECU and coil pack have packed up.

Don't buy one of these cars, they look nice but breakdown far too often.

1999 Peugeot 306 Meridian 1.6

Summary:

Great car!!

Faults:

Fog light had to be replaced twice. But was covered under warranty.

Bolt holding alternator sheared off, but again covered under warranty.

General Comments:

Excellent car, really love it. Great round the town and does 80 mph with ease on the motor way.

Only trouble is the interior looks a bit cheap.

Fuel consumption is great when using super unleaded.
