2000 Peugeot 306 LX 1.4

Summary:

In short - great car when running, but an absolute pain when it breaks (again)

Faults:

First thing to go wrong was the after sales service from the dealer - so bad that my wife still refuses to have any dealings with them!! Could be a one off.

Then the air conditioning packed in, was not critical by any means, hardly used it being a permanently freezing Scot anyway.

A year into my ownership the Alternator packed in.

Recently the rear wiper motor gave up the ghost, as did the rear wiring loom.

General Comments:

Alright to drive, seems to have a dead point in the acceleration, as ratio of gears between first and second gear does not seem consistent.

Great for driving in the motorway, but not nice if you're driving in town.

No Haynes manual ever written for this model!

Comedy under-steer, but thankfully not as bad as the Smart!!

2000 Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2.0

Summary:

Great handling hot hatch

Faults:

Heat matrix went at 42,000 miles, poring white smoke into the cabin. Cost over £300 to fix at the dealer.

Drivers seat starting to show some wear.

During my 1st year of ownership, when stopping the revs would drop below idle & the engine would die. Peugeot reprogrammed the ECU, but that didn't solve it. Hasn't done it for the past 20,000 miles or so!

General Comments:

An easy car to live with everyday & a joy to drive, not so easy to manoeuvre at low speed. Turning circle is abysmal, especially to the right.

Great power from the word "Go" & continues through all 6 gears, but really starts to come to life above 4,000 rpm.

Excellent handling. Slight under steer when pushing hard, but that can easily be solved with a little bit of lift-off over steer!

Doesn't tend to drink the petrol (approx 30-32 mpg), unless you want it to!

A great car for both handling & power, I will miss the fun we had together.

However, I won't miss the dealers!

I have got a 306 xsi 2.0 8v and I had the stalling problem you have got. turned out to be a lamba sensor that was not putting enough oxygen in the fuel mix causing it to stall. get that checked, should sort it out.

2000 Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2.0

Faults:

Car tyres are so easily puntured that I have already gone through 3 tyres. Previous history suggests so also!

The interior is squeaking!

The car whistles whilst I move from dodgy exterior build.

Window nuts just fall off!

General Comments:

Apart from the bad points mentioned above, there happens to be more.

The interior is just so bad it makes me weep.

The plastic dash is just plain awful.

There is absolutely no room for storage space. The glove compartment is so small, you can't stick your spare CD's in.

Room height in the rear of the car is atrocious.

Why did I buy it then?

Here some points below:

The performance is very good. Depending on the day the car will just fly. Acceleration is just absolutely brutal.

The engine noise sounds like an animal.

Beautiful!

Everything about this car is geared towards the drive.

Expect only thrills in driving the vehicle & not the interior.

I think that you are being pretty harsh with the Peugeot GTI-6! Firstly nothing on the car is 'ghastly' or 'atrocious' and why does the dash make you weep?? Do you clean you car with onions? Its simple and clean, which is much more attractive than the bubbly like interiors of new hatches. I am 6'3" and have no trouble sitting in the front or in the back, so a far as leg and head room go its all good! Interior is not squeaky, things don't just fall off! Have you crashed your car and just not repaired it or something because that's the only reason for all of these problems with your car. I never had any problems! I use to own a GTI-6 and it is quite quick, and you get a lot of kit especially when you consider how much you paid for the car! Anyway I just upgraded to a 550hp Twin Turbo Supra, which is the dogs!
