2001 Peugeot 307 LX 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A conservative, unexciting purchase

Faults:

Acceleration lag when pulling away. There is a noticeable delay between pressing the accelerator and the engine responding. Have been caught out by it. This is a severe problem that Peugeot ought to investigate.

Boot lock mechanism unreliable after a few weeks of use. Consequently affected central locking of car putting it at risk from theft.

Indicator stalk unreliable when indicating to turn right. Does not stay fixed in place. Peugeot unable to clarify if this is a design fault.

Trouble activating full beam lights. Have inadvertently dazzled drivers as a result.

Sunglasses compartment lid faulty. Never fixed by dealer despite promises. Can block rear view mirror if the lid should fall down.

General Comments:

Despite two accidents (within the space of one year none of which were my fault I hasten to add!), the 307 has performed admirably.

The amount of space in this car is amazing. You can easily accommodate five adults with bags of shopping with ease.

The ride is a little too firm for my liking. The suspension is stiff which is more suited to sportier cars.

The adaptive power steering is superb. Parking has never been easier.

The interior is pleasant with light gray cloth trim although the black dashboard does spoil the effect.

Visibility through the windscreen is excellent. Would not want to think how much a replacement would cost as it is huge.

The engine is responsive once you get going, but I have misgivings about its ability in pulling away from a complete stop.

Bodywork is excellent, but interior trim is a little tacky - especially the fake wood trim.

I have just purchased a second hand 307 1.4 LX and find that it does cut out now and again which is worrying. I also find that it doesn´t seem to have very much power.

Summary:

Good looking motor shame about the faults

Faults:

Delivered without floor mats which were part of standard spec.

Indicator switch auto-cancels too quickly and dangerously easy to hit main beam in the struggle to keep it on. Replaced, but still faulty to some extent.

Knocking noise - dealer has replaced most parts, but noise still apparent at times.

Failure of wipers on high speed in heavy rain - when taken to dealer no fault found. Again dangerous.

Failure of electronics, speedo, revs, air conditioning, radio for 1-2 seconds. Trip counter cycling through random numbers. No fault found, but software update done.

Recall for ignition switch.

General Comments:

Nice looking car, but very disappointed with the number of faults and the lack of customer service from Peugeot UK.

Difficult to see front corners of car.

2001 Peugeot 307 LX 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Don't touch it with a barge pole!

Faults:

Indicator switch had to be replaced.

Ignition lock replaced (recall)

Driver footwell carpet coming away.

Rear passenger door bump strip replaced (fell off!)

Boot lock replaced.

Boot carpet remoulded to fit rubber seal.

Near side front wheel arch liner replaced.

Front passenger seat back awaiting replacement.

General Comments:

Although the car drives pretty well, I guess from the list of faults you can come to the conclusion that it has appalling build quality. After only 5000 miles the car is falling apart. The dealer simply could not give a toss, and is quite happy to see me once every few weeks and get paid for carrying out repairs. This is not an isolated occurrence as I have had other 307 owners, complete strangers, approach me in the street when they see me parking up and ask me if I have been having any problems. Almost everyone has the same carpet/indicators/body work faults as I have described above.

As a satisfied 306 owner (we do exist!) I managed to get my hands on a 307 XSi for 24 hours earlier this year, and that was enough to warn me off. Despite just 750 miles on the clock there were creaks and baggy trim on the interior, some of the instrument lighting didn't work, one of the electric folding door mirrors didn't, and the (gutless) engine sounded about as appealing as a cement mixer full of bricks.

A nasty product.

I had been considering buying a 307 to replace my 99T Focus Ghia. Having driven a 1.6LX hire car for a few days, I liked its looks and space (up front anyway). I was somewhat underwhelmed by its performance - it is a heavy car, that's why it has plastic front wings and an aluminium bonnet - and its dull as ditchwater all black interior and flimsy interior fittings (the column stalks are horrible and the CD/Radio cheap tat). A couple weeks ago, still willing to give it a chance, I had a 110HDI on hire for a few days. That did it for me - new Focus Ghia arriving in a few days!

BTW, I saw a brand new 52 plate 307 in the supermarket car park today. Both nearside side rubbing strips were missing. Sums this junk up nicely.
