2002 Peugeot 307 XSi 2.0 16v petrol

Summary:

Well built, but as dull as ditchwater! Bring back the 306!

Faults:

Battery terminals worked loose, locking and immobilising the car.

Dash creaks a bit.

General Comments:

Not a patch on the 306 XSi. Lacks all the feel and agility in the twisties, and its massive bulk means even the 2.0 engine feels flat and lifeless. Entertainment value is nil - maybe the upcoming GTI will fix this although the massive bulk means it is unlikely.

Build quality is better, as is rear accommodation (irrelevant for me anyway), but after my 306 XSi I am appalled how Peugeot has gone so "old" in its design. Anyone who has grown to love the lift off oversteer, steering feel and sheer poise of traditional sporting Pugs will be massively disappointed. Me included.

Bought it hoping it would grow on me like the 306 did, but it's totally soulless and lacks any form of driver involvement. A bit of a betrayal from a company which has built its reputation and fortune on making drivers cars.

Recently visited my Ford dealer and tried a Focus 2.0 Zetec ESP - a nice Panther Black example will be on my drive in 2 weeks time. Everthing this car should be, but isn't

Indicators not canceling.

Electric windows not closing when using remote locking system.

Annoying squeak from engine mounts when turning off engine.

Sometimes when starting up engine it goes to max. revs even though throttle pedal is not being depressed.

Disappointed with fuel consumption on average according to the computer only getting 42 mpg.

The gearbox on my 2003 HDI 110 seems pretty good too, only problem is sometime I don't put it far enough into 5th and it pops out, but that's my own fault for having a strange driving position 2 miles from the gearstick!

2002 Peugeot 307 XSi 2.0 16v petrol

Summary:

Competent, safe, solid....yawn...

Faults:

Irritating buzz from passenger side dash at 3,000 RPM.

General Comments:

As sensible as a pair of brown Brogues and about as much fun.

Spacious, safe, comfortable and refined with awesome brakes, yet too uninvolving and way too big to be fun. The driver is very isolated from the action which is a complete U-turn for Peugeot. Also lacks the poise and balance under duress which Pugs are reknowned for, and the steering is vague and over-assisted. Also the 2.0 16v engine delivers very ordinary performance and is harsh and breathless when revved. XSi's are supposed to be drivers cars, not shopping trolleys!

It's been reliable so far, and dash buzz apart, seems beautifully built, but if I want that I'll buy a VW. Come on Peugeot, where's that sense of fun that's made your cars so popular in this country? Instead we have a car which is designed squarely for the 2.4 kids and the bolt on roof rack.

2002 Peugeot 307 GLX HDI 90

Summary:

A comfortable compact car

Faults:

It has been three weeks since I took delivery of the car from my local dealer and two minor problems have come to light so far.

When left overnight it rarely starts on the first turn of the key the following morning. The diesel pre-heater light is only on for a fraction of a second. Subsequent attempts to start the engine are normally successful.

Another minor annoyance is when the engine is idling at 800 RPM it sometimes feels like it misfires. I've tried taking as much load as possible off the engine i.e. Lights, Air Conditioning, but this makes no difference.

A colleague also bought a 307 HDI 110 one month before myself and he is also experiencing both of the above problems.

To be fair neither of us have reported this to the dealer yet, but I'm beginning think this is a common fault.

Finally I have to agree with a previous report that the indicators are too quiet and the self-cancelling leaves a lot to be desired.

General Comments:

On the whole the car is excellent and a real joy to drive. It is very stable at speed and corners with confidence coupled with good all round visibility.

Seating is very comfortable and there is plenty of passenger space.

The digital Air Conditioning works perfectly and the Radio/CD Changer gives a real quality sound.

This 'misfiring' you say I have to say I've experienced it with my HDi 90, I know mine has a smaller turbo, but when it's idling now and then it tends to splutter. Usually what I do (though not from cold) is give it a little rev to clear out the air filter, then you find it's a lot better.
