1993 Peugeot 309 GLD 1.9 diesel

Summary:

An economical motorway mile muncher

Faults:

The exhaust pipe rattles when the engine is turned off.

The speedometer cable needs attention.

No problems really, just annoying little things.

General Comments:

A definite for long motorway journeys - 150 miles to 1/4 of a tank.

4 speaker stereo system (made by Clarion of cause!)

Huge sunroof - its manual & a pain & hard work to keep sliding back & forward.

Very easy to change the oil at home - takes 15 minutes.

Boot is huge.

Seats 5 comfortably.

Steering bit heavy.

Got the image of a bit of a farmers car!

Just an update 3 years on. The car now has done 125000 miles (mostly motorways) and had to have a few things replaced. Had a new head gasket fitted after there was a mysterious loss of cooling fluids. Has also had this year new front discs and pads. All in all its still general wear and tear replacements and things inside are as good as ever. Just before Christmas I invested in a new stereo, but the old standard fit beast still works perfectly fine and when I do eventually part with my little girl it will be put back in. Other than that not a lot else to report. Anyone with further comments please feel free to make them!!!

150 miles to 1/4 tank sounds a little ambitious, mine will do about 450 miles to a tank. I find the car a little slow and wish I had the turbo diesel version (good ones are so hard to find now though!).

Other than that it is an excellent car. Mine has done 102,000 miles, the last 20,000 put on by myself with no problems. I had to replace the shocks when I bought it, but that's it.

I find my turbo diesel really good and I love it. It's getting elderly, but it does not have the same problems many cars have - it does not rust. Yes, I did spend too much on repairs last year, but it is still going strong and with few problems.

As far as motorway munching goes, it is very good at that, and since I frequently drive faster than the law allows on the motorway (I can do London from Ross-on-Wye in 2 1/4 hours), it is economical. In fact I still have fuel change after putting in £23 worth for the return trip (220 miles). Wouldn't change it for the world!

Summary:

Practical and lots of fun from a diesel!

Faults:

The boot lock went a bit dodgy after 64k miles. Exhaust had to be replaced after about 60,000 as expected. That's it!

General Comments:

10 for the performance, not because its superfast but because for a standard diesel it was superb with a first gear pull that could knock the socks off a petrol car of the same size engine. Overall, if this car is well cared for it can be a superb vehicle to own - economic, reliable, super responsive and inspiring handling (all this from a diesel eh?!). The engine is also very quiet and the ride nice and smooth as can be expected from Peugeot. The standard stereo is quite good too (Clarion made). Loads and loads of boot space!!! Nice, shame about the mediocre looks but you can't see the car when your behind the wheel with a great big grin slapped across ya face!
