1989 Peugeot 405 MI16 1.9

Summary:

The Ultimate Q car

Faults:

Brake calipers needed replacing, New horn, hazard warning switch. odd spots of Welding for the MOT.

General Comments:

Not the quickest car on paper, but feels so much faster than the 8.5 0-60 time listed the acceleration when in the powerband is nothing less than startling.

Handles very well up to the limit, but you can feel the under-steer building up in late braking hard turn ins and I always have the feeling that when it goes it will be spectacular.

Interior trim is very nice and the leather seats and arm rest are seriously hard wearing still look almost new on my 18 year old car.

This is my second MI16 the first being a 4X4 that was a bit of a lemon, but this one is sound if they weren't getting so rare id never drive another car.

Your story sounds eerily familiar. I too had a 4x4 that was a bit of lemon, and at the last MOT I needed new brake calipers, a horn and hazard warning switch, as well as some welding and the hand brake had to be adjusted.

I love these cars so much that I have had tow, despite the reliability issues. On the right road with no police man in sight, this is the most fun you can have for less than a £1,000.

I also have a V6 Golf 4 motion, which is much faster and much more composed, but nowhere near as much fun.

1989 Peugeot 405 GL 1.6

Summary:

Good cruiser, but keep it up together

Faults:

Water pump went, heater hose burst, cam belt replaced, front brakes replaced, handbrake cable replaced, float chamber needle replaced.

General Comments:

Pulls brilliantly for a 1.6, seats are really comfortable, loves motorway cruising.

1989 Peugeot 405 Mi16 1.9

Summary:

For £500 I couldn't have been happier

Faults:

Serviced on 31/5/02.

Mild rust forming on rear wheel arch.

General Comments:

From the first moment I test drove this car, I knew I just had to buy it.

The engine sounds fantastic, and revs cleanly to 7000 RPM.

There is plenty of room for 5 occupants and all of there luggage in the enormous boot.

Down sides are higher costs of parts, and an average of 30mpg, but that's not too bad for a 160 HP car.

I had a 1992 1.9 Mi16 and unfortunately had a lot go wrong with it, but it was a lovely car to drive and the handling was fantastic for it's size. I'm now in the process of sticking the engine into a 309 GTI.

For a 15 year used car the MI16 has held up well. Has a few rattles. At 100,5000 miles it drives, rides, handles, most importantly get up to speed in a quite brisk manner. Took it to a dragstrip once e.t. 14.56@97 m.p.h. Old American muscle car grounds. Plus you don't see them here in Texas.

1989 Peugeot 405 Mi16 Mi16

Summary:

The Mi16 is increadably quick, and great fun to drive.

Faults:

Power Steering effected by a very old fan belt, this was fixed by replacing the belt.

Clutch cable needed adjusting because it was causing the gear change to crunch.

General Comments:

This is the second 405 that I have had, both with the clutch cable problem, easily and cheaply fixed.

A lot of reviewers complain about servicing these cars, but they are great to service yourself, and most problems can be easily and cheaply fixed.

1989 Peugeot 405 Mi16 2.0 turbo

Summary:

Handsome, fast, sharp, comfy, and unreliable

Faults:

Both rear brake calipers failed and are expensive.

1 universal joint bellow failed.

2 years of computer problems, nobody can properly diagnose it or fix, very time consuming and expensive.

Maybe something to do with rain not flowing properly out of the Ecu chamber which is right next to the windscreen.

The wires that feed the horn failed and needed to be replaced, very time consuming.

General Comments:

Handsome car with very good and sharp handling.

Soft pliable ride, amazing for such a sporty setup, only the French can do this.

Thirsty even if you drive slowly.

Noisy interior trim, and parts will break over time.
