1999 Peugeot 406 GLX 2.0 injection

Summary:

Comfortable car from the french

Faults:

The exhaust kept on rattling.

When you have been on journey, say half an hour, when you stop and turned the engine off, there would be a strong smell of burning and grey smoke would also appear from under the car. Looks like the rear passenger tyre area to me.

A common problem on the 406 is that when you have the handbrake on, the brake fluid level low thing comes on the screen. This has been like that since we have had the car.

General Comments:

The engine has never broken down (touch wood). The only time it has had a spanner on the engine is for routine servicing (cambelt change).

1999 Peugeot 406 LX 1.8 petrol

Summary:

The Drive of My Life

Faults:

CD player ejection button stopped working at 67,000 miles.

Air conditioning failed at 75,000 miles.

Tyres wore very quickly. So far they have had to be replaced five times in less than two years.

General Comments:

Aside one or two electrical faults, the 406 has so far been a very reliable, economical, solid and nice car to drive. The 406 really is the drive of my life. Its tyres could also last a bit longer too!

I also appreciate the car's space and comfort.

With such a high mileage, I'm doubtful as to whether it can keep up its reliability so I'll probably trade it in some time this year.

1999 Peugeot 406 Executive 2.1 turbo diesel

Summary:

Multi purpose, very reliable (now), purring diesel

Faults:

The drivers door seal is not clipped to the body.

Only one cooling fan was running (constantly) so when booked in to have them both replaced, found the radiator would fall to bits when moving it, so that needed replacing as well.

Front brake pads and discs replaced when warning light came on.

Several tracking arms replaced around the car.

STOP light would keep making an appearance due to a faulty engine temperature sensor, making the dash thermometer read over 100.

ABS very violent on the steering due to dirty sensors behind wheels.

Back windscreen wiper only works when it wants to.

Air bag light comes on if front passenger seat is too low or has something underneath it.

Have spent nearly £2000 in last 11 months, although buying it at 114000 miles was expecting a few replacements needed.

General Comments:

This car is very comfortable and stylish. Having heated leather seats is a god send in winter along with the climate control kicking out some serious heat quickly, the cabin soon gets toastie.

The 2.1 Turbo diesel seems perfect for the estate body. It is never sluggish in any circumstance. When you put your window down (especially in a multi storey) the purr of the engine and whistle of the turbo makes all the problems with this car bearable.

The dogs love the room in the back, and there is nothing that I have not been able to fit in the back yet.

Only ever owning Peugeots I must say, Pugs do have their fair share of problems, but doesn't any car or model.

I wouldn't change this car for the world now. It is going to stay with me until its demise.

Erm, no - I bought my 1997 Nissan Primera 1.6 in 2010 with 83k. It's now at 130k and nothing has gone wrong on it. Nothing all.

1999 Peugeot 406 LX 1.8 petrol

Summary:

What did I do wrong to deserve such a lemon?

Faults:

Rear suspension arm failure.

Wipers went mad when gen2000 unit failed.

Entire electrical system shut down when water leaked into boot from poorly sealed rear light.

General Comments:

Just as well it's comfy because it didn't go anywhere fast.

Cost more to repair during two years and 25k than my 405 gtx dt did in 4 years and 100k.

Anything that went wrong required a return to a Peugeot dealer due to the overcomplicated electrics and diagnostic systems.
