2001 Peugeot 406 LX 2.0 HDI

Summary:

Great load lugger in comfort

Faults:

Air Con pipe rupture.

General Comments:

What a great shame Peugeot have stopped making this model. Owned the 406 saloon prior to buying the estate. Superb ride and handling, excellent fuel economy and good build quality. Eats front pads and discs. Best with Goodyear NCT 5's for all round performance, but expect only 20,000 miles if lucky. Now own a 307SW, and to be honest, I would rather have kept my 406.

2001 Peugeot 406 Rapier estate 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

Not bad at all, but could do with more engine power

Faults:

Various squeaks & rattles from interior.

Apart from that reliability was faultless in the 35,000 & 2 years I ran it as a company car.

General Comments:

The engine was gutless (90 bhp).

It was a good motorway car, being very quiet & had a very good ride quality.

Although the interior was dark, with black used everywhere (it even had black 'wood' inserts) it had a quality feel, especially with the chrome-bezelled instruments that were lifted from the 406 coupe.

The handling was exemplary.

As hard as I tried, I couldn't get the fuel consumption to fall below 38mpg.

I especially liked the climate control with digital display; set & forget.

The seats were resonably comfortable, although they could have done with more support & a centre arm-rest would have been nice.

The so-called automatic windscreen wipers were a joke -you had to initiate them to start with & they never wiped at the correct speed to match the amount of rain hitting the windscreen.

The automatic headlamps were annoying in that they'd come on as you went under bridges -other drivers thought I was flashing them.

The sound system was very good.

2001 Peugeot 406 GLX Estate HDi 2 litre 110 bhp diesel

Summary:

Roomy and comfortable, but slow and very expensive to maintain

Faults:

Inner door seal pulled away from fixings at bottom (it is easily caught when getting out).

Instrument panel died completely-no speedometer, tachometer, fuel guage or temperature gauge.

Indicator switch shorted causing random indicating initially and ending up with permanently operating indicators even when switch was central (off).

Head gasket blew at 67000 (still waiting to be repaired).

General Comments:

The car is comfortable and is very roomy.

The fuel consumption is reasonable as it is a diesel (typically averaging about 47 mpg).

The servicing is expensive especially the major service requiring a cam belt change which costs £400 alone.

After only 67000 miles the head gasket blew which is going to cost a minimum of £920 to repair.

I do agree with your comments on the cost of servicing. But what a great car. A feather bed ride, great handling, smart looks and acres of space. I owned the 110 version and always returned 47 to 49 mpg. Insurance was expensive, and yes, that all important cam belt change. Peugeot have since reduced the cost of this as owners were going to non Peugeot garages to have this done, resulting in an awful lot of cam belt failures.

As a result, this operation is now menu priced at £320.

2001 Peugeot 406 Rapier 1.8 16v

Summary:

An excellent, reliable car! Would highly recommend!

Faults:

As of yet I have not experienced any faults with the car itself.

General Comments:

The car is very reliable especially in winter.

The car also can pick up speed very fast especially on Motorways etc.

However I think Peugeot could have used a little more colour on the interior of the car instead of grey & black everywhere.

2001 Peugeot 406 V6 Estate 3 litre, 210bhp version

Summary:

Wonderful when it works :-)

Faults:

Engine management fault led to replacement of catalytic converters (all 3 of them) and lambda sensors, fortunately under warranty.

Engine speed sensor replaced.

Engine earth connection replaced.

Ignition coil failed, all 6 replaced.

Poor BSI connector repaired (multiplex wiring controller), led to various apparent faults and difficulty in diagnosing them as its the interface for the diagnostics.

Repeated (4 or 5) updates of software and fuel/timing maps over last 6 months have failed to resolve performance problems until latest download. Loss of power, delayed throttle response, erratic throttle response and gear changes (auto) combined to make the car's response to accelerator movements unpredictable.

An engine vibration coupled with uneven running in low rev range was introduced by a software update and still not cured although now much reduced.

It seems Peugeot's techs just can't get it quite right however many times they try.

Thank God its under warranty.

Every time it needs a spare part its off the road for days because they are never in stock at dealer or Coventry, or often even in France.

The parcel shelf and its mountings rattle and creak continually. I fixed one side after 3 attempts with self adhesive foam padding. My 2 previous 406 estates had same problem.

General Comments:

When its running properly its wonderful.

I bought it very cheap, half new price at 10k mileage and under a year old. Saved £5000 versus diesel I was really looking for.

I'd probably buy another if a similar bargain turned up.
