2002 Peugeot 406 GLX 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Decent looker, just wish it was more reliable

Faults:

Lots of electrical items, too many to list.

Mechanically, the car was OK, I did service it on time. Clutch judder near end of my ownership however, but did not bother fixing as I knew I was getting rid of it.

General Comments:

2002 Pug 406 in black, very nice looking car even today. I had this a long time despite the electrical issues, I liked it, thankfully I knew a Peugeot mechanic who helped me out a lot for a fair price.

Driving this car was fun with the smooth 2.0 petrol engine and it managed a bit more than 30 mpg, not great by today standards but acceptable in the 1990's and early 2000's. Would have preferred the diesels to be honest. But the petrol strengths were in more refinement and a better drive.

Interior is very spacious and relaxing place to be, I put a lot of miles on this car. Comfortable driving position. GLX had plenty of electrical toys to keep you happy.

Sold it back in 2017, I highly doubt at the age and mileage it will be at now that it is still around, but I will always remember these 406's as being nice looking cars, if not quite as reliable as the older 405's were.

They were great looking cars. The Xantia and Laguna were the same - smooth to drive, smart looking, just a little under par in reliability compared to other cars, shame really.

2002 Peugeot 406 LX 1.8

Summary:

Lovely car to drive, build quality could be better

Faults:

Leak in rear O/S footwell leading to flooding when it rains heavily, however have cleared out a lot of leaves and accumulated muck from windscreen scuttle, and cleared drain points under sills (tiny holes just in front/behind jacking points) and this appears to cleared the worst of it. There is water still coming in through door seal though.

Mysteriously vanishing engine oil.

General Comments:

Bought the big estate about 2 weeks ago as I needed something to carry drum kit, wife's cello and 2 year old daughter's stuff about. It has huge boot space which took a friends double bed with seats down no problem. Classy interior for the money.

Handles amazingly - better than my old Audi 80, and that was a saloon.

The engine is a bit underpowered for a car of this size, but has apparently a good reliability record and is fine on the motorway. It only struggles a bit on the steepest hills. Fuel economy pretty good.

Without doubt the most comfortable car I've ever owned.

However, annoying leak in rear passenger side door which seems to keep shifting about, and seems to have lost about 1/2 litre of oil in about 200 miles, with no obvious signs of leaking or burning.

2002 Peugeot 406 GLX 2.0 petrol

Summary:

If you don't need a car then the 406 is for you

Faults:

Two factory recalls, one on boot lock, one on side impact air bag.

Front brake disks warping.

Drivers heated mirror not working.

Cd player jumping.

Faulty oil level indicator x 2.

Oil leak from new oil sensor.

Indicators not operating properly x 3.

Horn defective.

Rain sensor slow to operate.

Passenger window rattles.

Central locking either nothing locks or everything unlocks by itself x 2.

New alternator fitted.

General Comments:

If you ignore all of the faults that the car has had, then the car itself is quite economical, comfy and good to drive. The main problem arises when you need to get the repairs done. I would not buy another Peugeot, not just because of the fault's, as if they are not enough, but also because of the poor back up you get from the dealer/Peugeot.

Indeed. I have had my 406 for 2 years now, and the niggles (plenty, if mostly different to yours) would be easier to put up with if the service was better.

I have had my 406 for 4 years now, am completely satisfied and the niggles (very few) were easy put up, with the service, here in Greece. It's a hell of car. INDEED.

I still have my 1.8 petrol 406SV for 6,5 years 'till now, am completely satisfied and the very few niggles were easy put up, with the service, here in Greece. It's a hell of (A DRIVING PLEASURE) car!!...

P.S: Just from yesterday, the battery shows signs of death

:-( " poor lady, was only 6.5 years old" :-)

Regarding the previous comment:

When you observe that the biting level of the clutch changes, you have most likely a problem with the hydraulic cylinder and/or one of its gaskets, whitch is not air-tight any more. Have it checked.
