2007 Peugeot 407 SE 2.0 HDi

Summary:

Not the best, but I like it

Faults:

Far too much to list. Let's just say this is not a reliable car. I bought used but it was looked after well.

Auto-box playing up was the most expensive thing to fix.

Oil leaks, engine misfires, etc.

On the plus side, the interior and exterior is holding up very well for age and mileage, better than most cars I have ever had! Very durable if not reliable.

General Comments:

For reasons I'll never understand myself, I quite like big French cars, but the problem is they are not as capable as the German giants (BMW, Audi, Mercedes) and not even up there with Ford or GM if I am being honest.

But don't get me wrong, this isn't a really bad car. Very nice to drive - smooth, comfortable, great looking inside and out. Solid feel of materials. Plush interior, feels more expensive than it is.

But the problems mechanically I had were far too frequent and expensive.

Oh and never get an automatic one of these - the 2.0 HDi engine has a nice turn of speed in any configuration, but normally you'd expect around 45 MPG or more from diesel. Well this automatic version takes 10 MPG off that figure. Yes, the best I have ever had is 35 MPG. Terrible for diesel. You might as well go for a petrol version. More reliable also.

I am keeping this 407 as a second car, it is not reliable enough to use everyday now. If you are thinking of buying one for yourself, don't - get the newer 508, they are much improved. The Lion didn't go from Strength to Strength in this Peugeot unfortunately ;)

2007 Peugeot 407 SW Sport 2.0 HDi

Summary:

Comfortable, nice to drive, not that reliable and the 406 was better

Faults:

Wheel bearing, shocks, ABS sensors, oil leaks, electrics not functioning correctly, EGR valve, air con stopped working, etc.

General Comments:

SW is the estate version of the 407. Very large and spacious. Not bad looking.

Sport model has part leather, panoramic roof, fully loaded, great for long journeys.

2.0 HDi is OK performance wise, plus you get 45 - 48 mpg.

Pretty decent car, just a shame about its average reliability and overall quality. Many years ago before this car I had a company 406 that in all honesty was better. But the 407, if you get a looked after car, is still only good to keep as a second car, I couldn't rely on it as a daily driver; I traded it in 2018 for a Mondeo which has been excellent so far.

I thought the reliability of the 407 was at least on par with the 406. Looks are subjective, but I do agree the 406 was sharper, especially the coupe. 407 coupe looks kind of odd. But all these cars as saloons/estates make great family cars.

2006 Peugeot 407 HDi SE 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

Nice car, but needed more reliability

Faults:

Typical diesel faults, EGR valve, injectors, etc. Wouldn't have been so bad had they not been so expensive to fix, but unfortunately even cheaper local independent garages could not get around the part costs. Some minor electric issues as well.

Everything else was wear and tear, and I had the car serviced on time at a reasonable price. Bodywork wise the car was surprisingly unmarked even as the age and mileage rose; looked great even in its final year with me, but I kept it cleaned and garaged.

General Comments:

407 SE in red with big 5 spoke alloy wheels, this car looked the part, if not quite as good looking as my previous 406, but I still liked the look of the car.

Inside the interior was also nice, grey velour very plush, SE model has mostly electrical gadgets and was well equipped. Very comfortable and spacious - best thing about this car.

The car was smooth to drive, had decent power and you could get close to 50 miles per gallon on a long cruise, 2.0 HDi was a decent engine (when it was running right).

I had it 10 years and served me reasonably well, but unfortunately could not match the good reliability of my previous 406 and 405 which were more reliable cars in every way. Hard to recommend the 407 nowadays because even they are older cars now, and have low value. I don't know if I'd buy one again, but if you like Peugeot's then you should probably consider the newer 508, I have heard that is a much better car. I scrapped this 407 in 2020 (just not worth repairing at age and mileage) and moved on to a BMW 5 series, which is very nice and will be a hard car to replace.

407 - these were OK, but you are right, the 508 is a much better car. My 2013 model 508 is still going strong with nearly 100K on it. As the years and mileage goes on however, being a diesel I still would not trust it not to give me any expensive repairs. But I am doing my best with it - the trick with modern diesel is to run them on quality diesel (not the cheaper stuff from supermarkets) and quality oil at service time, and give them a good long drive now and then to stop the DPF clogging up. This should keep most common diesel problems at bay for a long time at least.
