1982 Reliant Scimitar GTC 2.8

Summary:

Affordable Open Topped Family Fun

Faults:

Rotor arm cracked at approx. 90,000 miles.

General Comments:

This is a 20 year old car and you can't expect new millennium reliability; however, it's never let me down so far after 12 months ownership, apart from a cracked rotor arm which was easily (and cheaply) fixed.

With the top off, this is probably the most 4 seater fun you can have this side of a modern 4 seat convertible, at considerably less cost!

Insurance is really cheap on limited mileage classic car rates (how about £130 per annum) - depends on your location/age etc. of course.

If you're in the market for a classic 4 seater convertible, forget the Trumph Stag with its nightmare engine reliability and body rust problems, the GTC has a reliable 'Cologne' Ford 2.8 engine and a rust free GRP body.

Don't buy a GTC if you think it's going to be maintenance free. You have to carry out regular maintenance not normally associated with modern cars; regular oil changes, greasing running gear etc.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

A well balanced and spot on review. This writer has gone into his ownership of this car with open eyes. The GRP construction of these cars means that even a neglected one can look great until it becomes a series of one off mechanical nightmares, very expensive to sort professionally. A well maintained one is a joy that I would recommend to anyone.
