1987 Renault 11 GTX 1.4

Summary:

With decent build quality it could have been very nice

Faults:

Carburettor faults at each service or MOT test.

The clutch pedal broke (!) at about 5000 miles.

Replacement clutch pedal also broke within a couple of months.

Clutch used to stick and never operated smoothly.

New carburettor at about 30,000 miles.

Engine mount broke at 70,000 miles.

Electric fan broke at 70,000 miles.

It often failed to start for no good reason in the bad weather (especially snow).

Back seats, dash, electric, all fell apart quite regularly. Build quality is not very good.

General Comments:

Handling was a little wayward.

Ride quality was a little harsh.

The seats (especailly the front seats) were really nice.

The steering was very precise and quite light.

The reliability was not all it should have been.

The build quality was poor.

1985 Renault 11 1.4

Summary:

To buy & run one is cheap, but not so cheerful

Faults:

Most things have gone wrong at some point. Transmission lost 2nd gear, needed complete overhaul & now the computer has an intermitent fault. Weber carb butterfly got stuck open so got a new carb. Had 2 new CV joints, new steering rack, new front discs (twice), new battery, alternator & starter at various times.

Water pump & timing chain replaced after a few years as both were noisy & getting worse. Anti-roll bar bushes, steering bushes & a track rod end replaced as getting noisy. Rear drum repair kits fitted. Brake master cylinder was replaced when leaking. Rear torsion bar suspension bushes are tired but I can't be bothered to replace them!

General Comments:

This car is really just one to get from A to B. It's practical, reasonably comfortable but nothing special on the way it looks & drives. Although mine has had a lot of problems, there hasn't been anything major (except transmission) at any one time... probably why I've kept it running so long. To be fair, a better example may have not suffered so much. As the car is old, parts are cheaper now and non-Renault ones are available. But run the 11 for a long time and it'll show you everything that's bad about Renault cars.

1988 Renault 11 TXE 1.7 petrol

Faults:

Blown head gasket.

General Comments:

Unfortunately blown head gasket proved to be terminal... otherwise car was still going great; even the remote c/locking still worked! Likes its front tyres though. Surprisingly refined on the motorway, with plenty of go in it.

1988 Renault 11 Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol

Faults:

I was the owner of this car for two and a half years, during this time I didn't have many problems with it until the last few months before I sold it with the burnt out clutch, and bent front wishbone.

Previous to this it had a blown head gasket which only cost £80 plus oil etc and a weekend to replace. Two clutch cables, burst water pipe and an air leak from a turbo tube. I also had to replace two drive shafts due to it being to low.

General Comments:

Description:

Shiny red paint work,

Standard wheels but polished,

Lowered on bore springs and shocks,

Hybrid T2.5 turbo running a high boost output through actuator mods,

Ported cylinder head,

K&N induction air filter,

I loved the boost from 3000rpm, it used to hold me back in the seat.

It was a shame that the car couldn't cope after two years of high boosting.

My best memory is of this smarmy Porsche 944 owner who didn't stand a chance off the lights.

I love my 11 Turbo (from Portugal). It has been modified, red paint, 190 hp full burst at 4000rpm.

My friends call it "The car from Hell".

Top speed - 235km/h, turbo at 2.1 bar, Group N suspension, brakes and... sequential gearbox!!!

1988 Renault 11 Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol

Faults:

Wheel bearings and clutch cables kept going and the electic window motor broke. The only major thing was a new clutch. Except for that very little went wrong in 3 years.

General Comments:

Very underrated car, ugly but is as quick as any hot hatch from its time. Cheap to insure as it is only group 11 and cheap to buy.

Also the myth about Renaults not being safe in an accident is false. I came out of a 50mph head on accident with a few bruises.
