1990 Renault 19 TXE 1.7

Summary:

Best budget buy around

Faults:

Rain gets into to car's suspension and steering making it a hazard in the rain. Also as a result the front springs need frequent replacement.

The rear central looking is very temperamental and frequently do not lock automatically.

Recently the dashboard gauges have been sticking.

General Comments:

Given the age of the car and the number of miles it has covered it is an excellent vehicle.

The car's engine is reliable and all round performance is good; except for the car has been left in the rain.

The interior is both comfortable and spacious.

1990 Renault 19 TS 1.4 ENERGY

Summary:

Cheap, practical family car

Faults:

At 82,000 miles the clutch cable snapped.

One rear wheel bearing became noisy at 83,000 miles and was replaced.

A front wheel bearing failed soon after and was replaced.

It needed another front wheel bearing at 90,000 miles.

At 100,000 the battery failed.

The front disks and pads where badly worn and at 100,000 miles were replaced.

General Comments:

Superb fuel economy at 50 mpg+

I travel 250 miles a week in this vehicle and it has broken down once in almost 2 years of ownership with a snapped clutch.

Very quick in low gears, and has excellent headroom and boot space.

Very reliable for a 12 year old!

1990 Renault 19 TSE 1.4

Summary:

Very nice car, shame about the glitches

Faults:

Nothing too serious - since buying the car I've replaced the tyres, exhaust, brakes, shock absorber and a ball joint.

Recently the speedo cable has become loose. This causes the speedometer to emit a whirring noise, and makes the needle shaky at speeds above 45mph.

One problem I had was with a rear shock absorber. Corrosion around the mounting had caused the shock absorber to stick through the wheel arch and into the boot.

Some of the instrument lights are dodgy - the handbrake light doesn't always work, and the lights behind the electric window controls are intermittent. The interior lights in the back work when you fiddle with the switches.

Apart from minor glitches, the car has been fine so far.

General Comments:

The seats are possibly the most comfortable I've ever sat in. Very soft and well cushioned, but supportive at the same time.

Performance is much better than many other similar cars. I've achieved a top speed of 110mph (shhh - don't tell anyone!) and a 0-60 time of 10 seconds, despite the manufacturer's quoted time of 13 seconds!

I have a Renault 19 GTS 1991 and my experiences are much the same as yours, my rear shock has done the exact same. and speed wise I found the same as-well.

Nice review.

I'm thinking of buying a Renault 19 myself and have noticed the comments about the rear shock absorber.

Can anyone who has had this problem let em know how much they were looking at to get it fixed and if it happened again...

6th Jun 2005, 10:49

My 19TSE has been much the same as that mentioned, I have had mine 3 years without much of a problem at all apart from the interior light which has to be fixed every six months.

A new exhaust, 2 brake pipes, and 2 steering rack gaiters got me through 3 Mot's.

I would definitely have another Renault.

1990 Renault 19 GTS 1.4 Energy

Summary:

More reliable and cheaper than an Escort or Astra

Faults:

Nothing has really gone wrong with this car, apart from a minor problem with the tracking.

General Comments:

The performance has to be admired for a 1.4. The Energy model has a respectable 80HP and acceleration in the lower gears is excellent for a medium size vehicle.

The interior trim is a little on the drab side, but the dash layout is fairly good.

Fuel economy is excellent at 40-45mpg.

There is also lots of potential for boy-racer modification.

1990 Renault 19 Chamade Prima SAL 1.4

Summary:

Temperamental - will never own a Renault again

Faults:

This is an extremely temperamental car. In one year I had to have the head gasket replaced, drum kits replaced, the carburetor had to be stripped out and cleaned twice because of constant "jerking". The exhaust had to be replaced. The car is definitely sensitive to some types of fuel, ie. detests supermarket fuels.

The heater has never worked properly and drives me completely insane.

General Comments:

I am forever on tenterhooks when driving this car, as every now and again, it still "misses" or "jerks" despite repeated visits to the mechanic.

As for the heater, it has been in no less than 5 times to be fixed. No one can find out what the problem is. It works for all of 2 days, then starts blowing cold air afterwards. The heater works better during the day than first thing in the morning, when it is cold, even after driving 20 miles.

Why have I not got rid of the car and bought another one? I have no idea. Despite the above problems and the fact that I freeze my proverbials off in winter, it is a good car and nice to look at. Due to various unfortunate circumstances, I seem to have to buy a another car every 18 months or so. And quite frankly, have had enough of doing that!

My friend, I think you either have a faulty thermostat or air in the cooling system. Very easy to accidentally get air in the cooling system on a Renault. I had a Renault 5 and I always had that problem after changing the anti freeze, with similar results to those you are having!

I currently own a Renault 19 and I have had a lot of problems. The car has recently had a Head-Gasket and has been spitting oil out of the dipstick tube.

1990 Renault 19 GTD 1.9 diesel

Summary:

Excellent all round car

Faults:

One heater (glow) plug failed and a radiator hose started leaking, that's all.

General Comments:

Very powerful non-turbo diesel engine. Always starts straight away even in the severest of frosts.

Extremely comfortable and stable car. Well equipped for a diesel (all electric).

1990 Renault 19 TSE 1.4 Energy

Summary:

Great if not better than the Ford Escort at the time of manufacture

Faults:

Milometer has stuck and keeps clicking dropping the speedo needle by 10mph!

A pain to start after a nights standing.

General Comments:

Excellent car execept for the glitches.

Once started it performs well, it has more hp than a 1.6 and accelerates well.

1990 Renault 19 GTS 1.4 petrol

Faults:

General wear and tear after 6 years or so of motoring. Fuel Gauge went - amongst other things (expensive - given it's a plastic, small version of a toilet ball-cock!)

Servicing has been quite cheap.

Can't complain really - served me well.

General Comments:

Great car - bought second hand privately six years ago. Loathed to give it up because it is so economical.

Also think the old Renaults are better than the new version (Megane in this case) - test driven equivalent model and it felt like it had no guts and has very plastic feel interior. Disappointing so I'll probably look at another make of car.
