1995 Renault 19 RN 1.4

Faults:

Boot leaking in water.

General Comments:

Water was coming in from the back left wheel arch. RAC and AA report that the car is faulty but Renault refuse to take car back. First reported the fault 3 weeks after I got the car new on finance. Renault stated all they could do was to cut the car up, weld it, seal it and asked me to pay £10,000 for this. I refused and have not payed the finance company for four years, but still they will not go to court to sort this out. I have e-mailed Renault HQ in France several times but they will not reply. After 4 years the battle still goes on, in my view Renault make and sell faulty cars.

1995 Renault 19 RN 1.4e

Faults:

8,000 miles - Speedometer replaced.

14,000 miles - Water pump failed, unfortunately whilst on holiday in France (Renault parts not much cheaper in France than UK, and labour is expensive).

22,000 miles - Rear tailgate needed re-wiring because trunk wiring was being caught when tailgate was shut, resulting in rear wiper, washer and heated window failing.

24,000 miles - Catalytic converter failed (ouch!).

25,000 miles - still as yet undiagnosed grinding & banging noise from gear box, unable to reproduce and garage can not find fault. Very disconcerting.

General Comments:

This is my second Renault 19. I like all the features: power steering, electric wing mirrors/windows/sun roof. Don't like the performance much, a bit too sluggish at low revs. Once you're going it's a nice to drive, comfortable and handles well at speed. My first 19 was reliable, this one is a bit of a disaster.

1995 Renault 19 RT 1.9 Turbo Diesel

Faults:

Heating fan - motor needed to be replaced.

Otherwise nothing yet..

General Comments:

Minimal turbo lag - and then it shifts! Fairly comfy, and spacious in the back. Paintwork extremely nice - metallic BR Green.

An excellent buy - the last year before the Megane, so only £8,000 with 24,000 on the clock.
