1988 Renault 21 Turbo 2.0 petrol turbo

Summary:

Cheap French Rocket

Faults:

Clutch hydraulics died a slow and painful death.

Seized brake calipers.

Rust.

Sunroof wouldn't open.

Temperamental central locking.

Electric windows seized up.

New clutch needed.

Mammoth oil leaks.

General Comments:

This car was fabulous, quite possible the most fun car I have ever owned.

The torque curve when the turbo kicks in was phenomenal.

Seats are like DFS armchairs.

It feigned unreliability, but hung on until the end, a real fighter of a car - no such thing as limp mode.

Intermittent misfires are solved by putting your foot down.

The performance of this car is very good in the mid range I.e. 40 - 80 MPH.

I find the driving position and the seats very relaxing.

The car has only failed to start once in 11 years.

The most enjoyable car I have ever owned, that's why I have kept it for 11 years.

1988 Renault 21 Turbo 2.0 turbo petrol

Summary:

Extremely underrated car

Faults:

Distibutor seal gives the impression the head gasket is leaking oil.

Anti roll bar bracket fell off.

General Comments:

My vehicle was a one owner from new with FSH.

Has a Hill Motor Sport chip, group A dump valve, removed all plastic intercooler guards - 230 bhp is on tap, let's just say Imprezas often are surprised by my 2wd performance.

1988 Renault 21 GTD 2.1 diesel

Faults:

Dashboard lights.

Sill rust.

Tailgate wash wipe.

Windscreen sipers sheared off at speed.

Sticking throttle.

Rear screen heater.

Drivers side air vent blocked & disintegrated.

Groaning front suspension when cold.

Factory fit Phillips stereo failed.

Drivers seat mounting failure.

Tailgate struts broken.

General Comments:

Mechanically sound and reasonable economy (c.40MPG)

Heavy to drive and slow to build momentum - though a good high speed cruiser and quite rapid when revs are maintained. Reasonable gerabox.

Electrical and trim quality a total disaster with a different rattle and failure almost a daily occurrence. Factory supplied stereo and rear speakers are appalling - though easy to change.

1988 Renault 21 Turbo 2WD 2.0 turbo petrol

Faults:

Water pump, boost hoses, water hoses, turbo. head gasket too (doh!)

General Comments:

It's not coincidence that everyone has rated theirs at 10/10 for performance. Just check out any older car magazine (and they don't do it justice).

One final comment -

Check out What Car 1992 - Where they rated the Quadra above the Cossie 4x4.
