1990 Renault 21 Estate GLX 2.0 petrol injection

Summary:

Too many annoying faults

Faults:

Electric windows all failed regularly.

Doors often popped open while driving.

Wiper linkage broke twice.

No heater.

Rust to rear tailgate, sills, doors.

Needs modification to go through water at all (air intake is very low), and even when altered electrics don't like it.

Front bumper too low, gets smashed offroad. Best to remove lower spoiler completely.

General Comments:

Generally the car's quite capable, with good towing power. Pulls a 2.5ton trailer easily.

Shabby interior.

Good engine until it gets wet, then it stops.

Quite good at pulling tree stumps as it's a heavy car.

Amazing economy for a big car, 43mpg (petrol) when driven carefully on the motorway.

1990 Renault 21 Turbo 2.0

Summary:

A lot of car for very little money!!!

Faults:

CV joint collapsed.

Alternator.

Clutch.

Radiator.

Brake Calipers seized.

Hand Brake.

Boost Hoses split.

Coolant Hoses split.

General Comments:

Wouldn't consider buying or driving anything else.

It may be showing its age, but it can still out perform many of todays quick cars.

What else can you buy for the money, that handles and accelerates so well, and gives you sheer adrenalin rush every time!

1990 Renault 21 2l 2.0 turbo

Summary:

Embarrasses an Impresa with ease!

Faults:

Radiator leak and blew up the turbo - only have myself to blame for both faults. Other than that, no problems!

General Comments:

Very fast car as standard.

Mine has (deep breath) a full scorpion exhaust, high lifters, dump valve, two cross-overs, turned up turbo, 17" Momo's uprated filters and is super chipped!!

Very comfortable.

If you like fast cars, get one of these and modify it!

"A cheaper and better car than a Cosworth" "Touring car handling with performance to put many to shame" "Rolling road tested at 163,000 miles - 203bhp at the flywheel and 175bhp at the wheels..." You cheeky monkey! That's one of the funniest things, I've ever read

I had a 21turbo 2wd with 120000 miles on it.

In a word : MISTAKE.

1990 Renault 21 TXi 2.0i

Summary:

Moves very quickly!

Faults:

Water pump.

Ball joint.

Bulbs behind the electronic display.

Transmission mount.

CV joints.

Movement in steering wheel (up and down) but not serious.

Funny squeaking noise when the steering wheel is turned.

Petrol tank straps both were badly corroded and even burst.

Rear discs pitted and are only 2 years old.

ABS computer decided whether brakes would work or not so that was disconnected.

General Comments:

Since moving up from a Vauxhall Nova 1.2 to this 2.0i beast I have had no real regrets and at a cost of £460 quid I can't complain either. I would definitely buy another 21 TXi but would rather have a turbo as there are more easily tuned.

ABS provides a brake problem and nobody seems to know why.

Although having 8 previous owners, the 21 still runs good and moves seriously quickly on a hot day!
