1988 Renault 5 Event 1.2

Faults:

Rust spots in all the usual places and the throttle cable broke, needed a new alternator but everything else is fine - no leaks or anything. A slight hesitation in accelerating around corners, think there maybe something blocking the fuel flow. A few dash lights such as the electric window light on the passenger side have stopped working also.

Needed a good engine clean out.

General Comments:

Great little car, accelerates very well for a 1.2 and looks good too (Blue Grey colour). It is a 3 door Renault 5 with central locking with a zapper and electric windows. Very plush interior apparently it is a special edition at least that's what the Renault garage said (THE EVENT). I don't know if anyone knows anymore about my car mail me at: 20012162@nene.ac.uk

1988 Renault 5 Campus 1.1 petrol

Faults:

Nothing major. I have had no problems with it at all. The worst I have had is a flat battary. A few rust spots are appearing but nothing that can't be sorted.

General Comments:

A great car for the first time buyer. Very slow but it handles like a gem. It has no overtaking power so you have to time your run ups carefully.

In contrast to your findings I found the Renault 5, particularly the GTS and the GTX (both non turbo variants) rather nippy, which as I have found are easily capable of achieving speeds in excess of 60km/h (38 mph) in second gear, going up a hill!

1988 Renault 5 GTX 1.7 petrol

Faults:

Starter motor, the metal bit just inside the gearbox that the drive shaft goes into (technical description - cost £500 to repair!)

General Comments:

Nice car, fast, comfortable. Much less common than XR2. Expensive parts. Main dealer had car for 2 days and couldn't diagnose the gearbox problem, another Renault specialist garage found the problem in 30 minutes. Red paint suddenly faded dramatically.

I have a red Renault 5 GTS which is the 1.4 litre, the model down from the GTX, I have also found the red paint to fade, mainly on the mudguards (wings) and the rear tailgate.

1988 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol

Faults:

The turbo has blown twice as I thrash the hell out of it but is now replaced and I have fitted a new dump valve which has cured the problem.

I have also fitted a water cooling system.

General Comments:

Has GT Turbo side skirts, rear spoiler, BB4 exhaust, lowered 50mm, 19 inch Venoms alloys - excellent condition.

It must of taken a lot of time and effort to fit 19 inch wheels. I got 17's and I have a problem! Oh, and could you tell me how much a new Turbo on its own costs?

For the guy interested in how much a new turbo is: New one from Renault expensive about £350.

I managed to pick them up second hand one for £80 and one for £100.

Once removed shake turbo see if there is a rattle, if yes- don't buy. Also check the turbine blades, check not twisted or chipped.

I don't believe you fitted 19s on a Renault 5 you need your head looked at.

And it's a Renault 5 why do it it they look crap anyway.

1988 Renault 5 GTX 1.7 petrol

Faults:

Intermittent wipe.

Lights on dashboard.

Central locking.

Water pump.

General Comments:

Surprisingly fast and with plenty of torque. Sometimes hiccups if you put your foot down suddenly. Seems to drink petrol, but probably just needs tuning. Renault parts V. expensive.
