1989 Renault 5 1.4

Summary:

Like a cheetah with arthritis

Faults:

- Radiator split in two.

- Electrical and fuse problems.

- Constantly replacing parts on the front end.

- Drive shaft had to be replaced.

- Fuel cap snapped off in my hand.

- The ventilation fan broke (twice)

- Sun roof leaking.

- And many more adventures.

General Comments:

For a 1.4 engine, it runs pretty well. It's anything but slow in the city. 1st gear 0-40, 2nd gear 40-80. Once you get out of the city and try to overtake it feels like trying to push a donkey off a cliff. Above 80 Km/h it has an acceleration (if you can call it that) similar to a cheetah with arthritis. Very economical engine. 8 L/100Km city and 6L/100Km highway. It's not bad for off road too. The car is very high and the thin tires have no problem dealing with mud or snow.

The build quality is absolutely stunning. In a bad way. The creaking, squeaking and clonking you have to put up with while driving is simply a hell on Earth. There is no way to fix it, as once you have fixed one squeak, another one replaces it. Over 30 Km/h it sounds like you are in a fighter jet. The wind and tire noise make it hard for you to hear your own thoughts. Sometimes it feels like whatever you touch breaks off in your hands. Handles, buttons, seat levers etc.

If you buy this car, be prepared to spend the same amount of money you paid for it every year on repairs.

"once you have fixed one squeak, another one replaces it"

Indeed, don't fix the squeaks: put lotion on it!

Hey, I am not kidding! Find those rubber and plastic pieces that rub each other as the body twists and bends. Put lotion there and the squeaks will be gone.

1989 Renault 5 Campus 1.1 petrol

Faults:

When it is cold or wet, it seems very hard to start, but eventually gets there.

Some parts of the car are placed in a very bad position for the everyday man.

General Comments:

A very cheap car to run on petrol.

The body is great, but needs care to stay that way.

The engine is very nippy and I was impressed as I bought the car for 40 pounds in near great condition.

For a cheap car the interior is practical, but as you go up the market you may not see it that way.

All in all, a more than good car for the price.

1989 Renault 5 GTS 1.4

Summary:

Reliable, fairly low maintenance. Some normally simple jobs are akward to carry out

Faults:

Smells inside of petrol.

I had to put a new starter motor on. This is a very tricky job to do from above the engine, I only just managed to do it after turning the motor around in the compartment it is 'hidden in', and withdrawing it upwards.

Another nightmare job is changing the heater matrix. The dash has to be taken completely apart including the centre console to get it out. The floor was wet for weeks inside the car!

The steering became absolutely terrible. It turned out that both track rod ends were worn out as were the lower bushes. Front tyres became badly worn due to the problems with the steering.

Brakes aren't too good. Put new disks and pads on front. Rear cylinder leaked and had to be renewed. Bled the system, but brakes still aren't good.

The hinge on the boot lid mysteriously became bent, and now the boot lid does not seal properly.

The full beam on the lighting circuit stopped working, have not found out the reason for this.

Clutch cable snapped.

The engine seems to be burning a small amount of oil.

Driver's seat staring to wear on upright near door pillar.

The suspension seems overly bouncy. Probably needs new struts.

General Comments:

The paintwork seems to be lasting extremely well and there is virtually no rust on the car.

Surprisingly quick for engine size.

Pretty flexible boot space.

Interior utilitarian, but it's what you would expect.
