1991 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol

Summary:

Be jealous, it is well worth the gamble!!!!!

Faults:

Needed a new service kit for the carb and a full tune.

New exhaust and tyres, so far that is it!

General Comments:

Got this car for under a grand (previously stolen and recovered, but that was when it was 1 year old).

Mine was lowered too much, which resulted in unwanted banging from the back end (pardon the pun). It was very noisy, had to have it raised.

My mate has a Sierra Cosworth, and he can't get away from me, so it's got to be good!!!! Very, very fast, but at a cost, since I got the car it is only doing about 21 MPG. Is this normal? I don't drive like an idiot all the time??

I noticed that in your review you mentioned that you're only getting 21MPG... I've got the same problem and I know for a fact that it isn't normal... when I drive normally (under 3000 revs) it still only does about 21MPG... it's costly & not right... I think the air fuel ratio needs doing!

1991 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 carb turbo petrol

Summary:

Best fun you can have with your pants on!!

Faults:

New clutch within a month, not cheap!! Lost count of the number of clutch cables, even after the manufacturer's pedal modification had been fitted.

Exhaust went.

Leads and dizzy cap replaced.

Starter motor.

Loads of suspension work for MPT.

Kept getting broken into.

General Comments:

An absolute flying machine.

Frustrating when things go wrong because they are generally very dear to fix, and the 5 GT is not a car to work on unless you are a competent mechanic, which I am not!

The Phase 2 is a vast improvement on the Phase 1 both in terms of reliability and looks. Far and away the best hot hatch for sheer performance and value for money. Attracts attention from the wrong types though hence insurance aint cheap.

1991 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol

Summary:

Quite simply the best car I have ever owned

Faults:

Timing sensor.

Wheel bearings.

2x broken rear shocks (lowered 65mm).

Broken electric window motor.

General Comments:

Put in a new race tuned 260 bhp engine. This thing shifts, see you later 420 bhp Cossies. Does 0-60 in about 5 seconds.

1991 Renault 5 GT Turbo 1.4 turbo petrol

Summary:

Fast n fun

Faults:

Electrical fault - 9,000 miles (warranty).

Wheel bearings about every 10,000 miles.

Clutch - 70,000 miles.

Exhaust - 90,000 miles.

Turbo - 110,000 miles.

Clutch again - 112,000 miles.

General Comments:

Like the car, don't use it that often, but won't sell it, will probably keep it forever.

Wouldn't buy a new Renault as I don't like anything that they make at the moment. The old Clio 16v is probably my other favorite Renault.

The reason the wipers don't park is probably because the fuse has blown.
