1997 Renault Clio RT 1.4

Summary:

An excellent first car

Faults:

So far nothing has went wrong with it while I have owned it.

General Comments:

For the size of the engine and the power output, it is rather quick, most likely due to the lighter weight. But all in all, it is a pretty good engine.

Most reviewers say it is spacious. I find that it only applies to the ones driving and front passengers, as although I am only 5 foot 11" 'ish (most likely an inch or two taller), and my younger brother is nearly the same height, even shorter people sat behind me find it a really tight squeeze. If the seat is moved ANY further forward than right back, driving becomes uncomfortable and I'm unable to operate the car properly. Although if the backseats are taken out, it becomes quite utilitarian.

Just recently I have made a 322 mile journey, filled the tank once at the beginning, and ended it with 1/4 a tank still left. This is with a 40 litre tank. My calculations left me with the result as approximately 50mpg; they may be wrong, but I trust them. Pretty good for a 1.4 petrol eh?

1997 Renault Clio rn 1.2 petrol

Summary:

The best of all the small cars

Faults:

Exhaust needed new part at 50000 miles. only cost 50 eur

General Comments:

A diamond of a car for a small vehicle and engine size.

Very economical I couldn't fault it. went 35 miles in reserve looking for late night petrol station and there was no problem with it.

Runs smoothly, no squeaks or rattles one hundred times nicer than the sax to drive and performance is much better.

Never fails to start or cuts out.

Compact, ideal run around or beginners car.

1997 Renault Clio RT 1.4i

Summary:

I love my Clio! Its been a lovely reliable car (has never not started/broken down!)

Faults:

The sidelight icon on the dash doesn't work all the time - however a little tap on the dash can turn it back on - obviously a faulty connection!

Has needed new back box and front end of exhaust - mind you - at 77,000 miles that's not bad!!!

Also needed new water pump at approx 74,000 miles.

General Comments:

My little Clio is very nippy!!

Has all the fun things you would find in a newer car (electric windows/sunroof, PAS, Alarm/Immob, etc etc)

Interior extremely comfy! - funnily enough that is something which has been commented on by a lot of people!

Interior never looks dirty - immaculate!!!

Has never EVER let me down - starts first time, every time (and mine has been parked on the street in all weathers! even snow!!!) Very Very Reliable car!

Excellent Alarm system!!!

This review was actually written by me.

But thought id add about the sidelight thing... electrics went in the windows, and also the dash icons all went haywire! - all earthing probs : (

But had everything sorted for £35.00!!! the electrician commented on how easy it was to fix the problems in the rt as the dash apparently just comes right out, making repairs nice and easy!

Hi I have a 97 Clio 1.2, I would like comments from other users, my cars clutch doesn't release smoothly between first and second gear, I also get a noise from the petrol pump like a whistling kettle, any ideas on these faults? otherwise a good little reliable car, always starts first time no matter the weather, a little rust on the back wheel arches, but good on petrol.

1997 Renault Clio Williams 2 2.0 16v

Summary:

If you get the chance, buy one

Faults:

Plenty has gone wrong with the car:-

Clutch went at 45000, now has an up-rated 'Black Diamond' clutch.

Sump gasket went at around 55,000 miles.

The electrics are absolutely shocking, found this on all old Clio's though.

Immobiliser went leaving me stuck for 10 hours on a Sunday night.

Front wheel bearings went at 50,000 miles.

General Comments:

Despite all the above the car is seriously quick, with the super-chip, induction kit, full s/s exhaust, up-rated manifold, up-rated plugs and ignition leads.

Would not swap the car for anything in the world, sad as that sounds it's true.

The handling has been improved further by adding coil over suspension and lowering 60mm. The car now sticks to the road like glue.

The last thing that needed work was the brakes. For the performance I didn't feel these were anything special. Now running a set of up-rated brakes and the difference is incredible.

Seriously though despite the problems this is an amazing car for the money, I'd recommend to anyone..
