1997 Renault Laguna RT Sport 1.8i 8v

Summary:

I love driving it!

Faults:

Nothing unusual - Radiator leaked at 85000 or so miles.

Both rear brake pistons leaked, but this was at over 100,000 miles.

The thermostat stopped working at about the same time as the radiator leaked.

Both drain plugs for the sunroof clogged up so water leaked into the cabin.

Wiring for the front fog lights gave a small bit of trouble.

General Comments:

It is a quick car. I've gotten 128 mph from her! I do about 105 miles a day so this keeps it lively.

114,000 miles and its not burning/using any oil between services.

Its very comfortable and as far as I know the original shocks are still on it!

It's a well speced car, remote central locking, ABS, electric windows, sunroof & mirrors. 6 disc cd changer with finger tipped controls on the steering wheel.

I still get about 41/42 mpg from her.

I have a 1998 rti 2.0 sport, my fog lights do not work, have checked the fuse and bulbs, in what manner has the wiring given you some problems, I tried to look at it myself but I'm built like a small country, not made for fiddling in tight engine bays.

Have you tried taking the actual foglights out and cleaning the connections?

They can be removed from under the front bumper; I had the same problem on my 2000 Clio 172, they're an absolute bugger Renault lights for collecting muck on the contacts and cutting out. Had the same problem with my rear numberplate bulb.

Summary:

Best car by far, gives BMW a run for their money and probably even better

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

My dads actually bought this car in 2000 and it's been a god send. It is coming up to it's 10th birthday next year and there are no signs of rust or scratches. This has been a great car and never broken down. My dad cleans and polishes this car every Sunday and the results are brilliant. It averages about 37mpg which is very good for an engine of this size (2.0). Also acceleration from 0-60mph is about 8 seconds, also I have heard that a car of same spec can keep up with 1.8turbo Audi tt. Pretty impressive with a car of this size. Also great for traveling and towing. If you want a reliable car which features comfort and a real head turner, then this is the car for you.

The only place a 2.0 Laguna will get near a TT is in your dreams.

You are about a second optimistic in your 0-60 statement. It's actually just over 9 seconds.

BMW's build quality is in a different universe to Renault's.

Hope this helps.

This car is very quick and I totally agree with the keeping up with other Audis. This is an understated car and 0-60 is really impressive.

1997 Renault Laguna rt 1.8

Summary:

Absolute cracking machine

Faults:

Clutch had just started to slip, but its the original clutch and its now done 53,000 miles. Downpipe on exhaust and leaky fuel filter. Nothing else as yet and nothing unexpected. The things I've come up with are just total consumables... to be expected.

General Comments:

What a car!!..Absolutly stunning to drive, like a sofa on wheels. Complete silence inside, floats through the gears like the were feathers and even returns good mpg. Not too bad on the power ratings either, drop it a gear and it'll deliver! The brakes are lethal! just breathe on them and your stopped.. I often have to give it a rev when its standing still just to hear its still running, its so quiet.

1997 Renault Laguna RT 2.0

Summary:

Comfortable Drive

Faults:

The heater matrix pipe had a crack, also the bleed valve was to be missing!

Airbag light won't switch off on the dashboard.

The smell of petrol was everywhere in the car if you drove with your window wound down. This was coming from the boot of the car, where the fuel pump is.

SERV light was flashing on the dashboard, looked in the hand book regarding this error, to find I must contact a Renault dealer immediately. Later on I disconnected the battery then connected it again, this solved the problem.

General Comments:

Very comfortable drive. The car handles well on fast country roads, the horse power is definitely there when overtaking cars.

It's a bit sluggish on startup, but once the car is running, it's a very comfortable ride and always starts first time.

This car is a bargain for what I paid for it, only small niggles here and there. Overall I'm delighted with the car.

My seat (the drivers) was broken, so I paid £30 for one off a scrap car. I also had the same problem with the airbag light staying on. I had it reset for £30..
