1998 Renault Megane RT 1.9 diesel

Summary:

Cheap, not so cheerful

Faults:

The stereo was terrible, the radio reception was awful and it only had front speakers.

A plate over the exhaust became loose every time I went through a puddle and then made a massive rattle every time the exhaust vibrated.

Rust around the windscreen.

General Comments:

This should have been a decent car as it was comfortable and well styled.

It's such a shame that it was made so cheaply, it just had so many annoying things about it that I was happy to see it go.

The immobiliser had a drive off time of around 1 minute. I was forever resetting the thing.

The 1.9Diesel engine was very slow, but despite me always thrashing it, it was very reliable, but woke up the street every morning sounding like a tank coupled with that annoying Renault whine.

1998 Renault Megane RXE 1.6

Summary:

Lots of equipment, good handling, shame about the service

Faults:

After 3 months the automatic gear box failed at 50,000 miles and is at the garage at the moment having a new one fitted. Luckily the warranty covered it as it is costing over 2000.00 pounds. Also have been having trouble starting it and have had to call out rescue services.

General Comments:

The service department at my garage are the worst ever. The only loan car they could give me was a 91 Renault 5 which I had to insure myself at cost. This is after I told them I would need a loan car when I had booked it in over a week before. They told me tough. They also said they made everyone pay for a hire cars insurance which is new to me as I have never had to in the past and have not had accidents. I am really annoyed with them and not sure I would buy another car from any Renault garage just of principle.

1998 Renault Megane Coupe 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A great car!

Faults:

The sunroof blind is in two parts, and the back bit seems always to get stuck.

Due to the mileage and the harsh life the car has led, the discs needed doing. Replacing them was awkward; Renault supplied me with the wrong kit and the calipers wouldn't loosen.

General Comments:

It's a fast, reliable car; and it's yellow of course! Which I think suits the car well.

Compared to my last car its nippy to say the least.

The only gripe is it's a bugger to clean the inside of the windows!!

And its seen off more than a few boy racers in their Nova's at traffic lights...

1998 Renault Megane Coupe 2.0 8v

Summary:

Fast, fun and great looking car

Faults:

The car sometimes doesn't start too well and you have to idle it manually on cold mornings. After you have driven for a few minutes though it runs fine.

General Comments:

Good performance and whilst not mind blowinly fast, there is solid power and it definitely beats many cars off the lights.

The handling is good too and predictable.

Petrol consumption is really poor round town, but on the motorway runs it's more economical than my old Cavalier which is surprising from a 2.0 litre engine.

Choose this if like me you could not afford the 2.0 16v Coupe, although this 8v model was hard to find.

I now have 82k miles on this car and no intentions of changing it. Meanwhile I've replaced both rear wheel bearings-again! The gearbox can be frustratingly notchy in the first 3 gears, but its been like that since new. The starter motor slowed down and it had to be dismantled ind greased and new brushes fitted around 60k. Immobiliser stops working about once a year, then an hour later (or day) it starts working again... A few small rattles here and there, but still a beautiful car that passes its NCT test every time.
