2003 Renault Megane Dynamique 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Don't bother

Faults:

Engine management light on - official dealership failed to diagnose, but charged me anyway.

Exhaust back box fell apart.

Discs warped and cracked.

Various front suspension pieces failed.

Driver's door window regulator failed.

Rear nearside window will not open.

Front nearside window opens and shuts on its own.

Alarm sensors got knocked off by my dog - no alarm.

Coil pack on cylinder 3 (I think) failed - rescue services to the rescue as the car was going nowhere.

Regularly cuts out when idling.

Lumpy tickover.

Misfires badly in top gear at approx 75-80mph.

General Comments:

Well, based on this ownership experience, the probability of me buying another Renault is zero.

Appallingly unreliable.

Maybe I got the runt of the litter, but the prices to repair are shocking - over £300 to change a blinking failed wire cable controlling the front window - AKA the window regulator.

You are having a giraffe. The car's probably not worth much more than that.

Was horrified by the state of the discs - extensive cracking and warping. MoT bloke couldn't believe it either.

This car never feels "right" - I'm constantly waiting for it to break down.

The windows are a joke - do an internet search - you'll be kept busy.

The engine stutters, misfires, throws up random engine codes.

The official dealer never gets further than charging me labour and giving me a quick shoulder shrug.

Going back to VAG now - probably a nice and simple diesel Audi A3.

In the Megane's defence, no one has tried to steal it yet.

Plus, over the last 80+ gallons of fuel, it has averaged 41.3 MPG - basically 70 MPG dual carriageway cruising each morning.

I have seen as high as 44 MPG when tickling it up the M1, waiting for the misfire to kick back in.

Would not buy again.

2003 Renault Megane Dynamique 1.6

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong as such, but everything on the car seems to be "budget". Everything seems to work, but I feel a constant worry that it won't last for long.

On braking, the seat back moves with me.

The exhaust is clunking, but all mountings are in place.

The body panels don't line up and are a slightly different colour.

The clutch judders when cold.

Fuel economy is nowhere near as good as I expected compared to my previous car. 20mpg from a chipped and tuned (280bhp) Focus ST, but a mere 34mpg from a 1.6 normally aspirated Renault engine??

General Comments:

Like the amount of storage - wish the Focus had that. Like the glass roof.

The prompter to the left of this entry says "This car is seriously quick and handles like it's on rails". It's a 1.6, so it's not fast. It handles like it's on rails. The problem is that all four wheels are on completely separate rails. Unfair to compare to a Focus ST though!

2003 Renault Megane VVT 1.6

Summary:

Would not buy or recommend another Renault again!!

Faults:

Within 2 months of buying the car, I had to spend £700, replacing dephaser and various other parts; was without the car for a couple of days.

Now having the problem of the passenger window regulator has stopped working, and is in the fully down position, and rear driver's window will not open.

General Comments:

Only bought the car as I had been in an accident the month before, and my car was a write off; thought it would be safe (5*), which it is, and reliable, which it is not.

2003 Renault Megane Dynamique 2.0 VVT

Summary:

I just love driving it!

Faults:

Drivers electric window stopped working (typical).

Clutch start sensor gone (have to press brake to start).

Boot catch failed and replaced.

Really cold mornings (below -5 degrees) can lead to various electrical issues. Hands Free locking didn't work and "Auto Wiper Fault" message. Fixed themselves when temperatures rose!

General Comments:

Absolutely love my Mégane!

Chose this particular one as it is loaded with options. It's got:

17" Nervasport Alloy wheels.

Automatic climate control.

Full black leather interior (amazing!)

Panoramic glass sunroof.

Electrically folding door mirrors.

6 CD Autochanger.

Hands Free Renault Card.

And that's just the extras!

The Ink Blue metallic paint and satin chrome door handles really set the car off.

Regularly use the Mégane to travel between England and Ireland. It's great on motorways, the 6 speed gearbox is awesome. Plenty of pull in any gear (it will comfortably move off from 30 MPH in SIXTH GEAR) - and it's great racing away from the lights!

Fuel consumption - 30 MPG average, road tax is £215/year. Yes it's expensive, but worth every penny. Not many 2.0 Méganes around either, very rare to see one.

Favourite features: Hands Free Renault card. Just keep the card on you and the car unlocks when you touch the handle, you don't need to insert it to start it, and just click the button on the handle to lock the car - love it. Panoramic sunroof makes all the difference. The car would be really dark without it, but it's nice and airy, even with black leather.

It's aged well too, still looks great.
