In 18 months only had to change the front brake pads.
The fuel costs are pretty good, it doesn't waste any. It's a bigger car than most people think so a 1.4 isn't great, but it does get you out of trouble if needed. Also it has more class than other makes.

Unfashionable but an absolute steal!
A bit of wobble under braking, a little rust bubbling up here and there, but on the whole nothing serious. Haven't sorted any of this out yet so don't know if Rovers are expensive to repair.
A reasonable car at a very reasonable price. These cars are VERY unfashionable so are ridiculously cheap, but the standard of equipment and general build quality make this a real bargain. But, you're not going to turn any heads with it, so if you like to stand out in the crowd, look elsewhere.

Best kept secret on the roads
Difficult to start from hot. Never fails from cold. Becoming very frustrated with this problem, spent over £200 so far with no success. Nobody seems to know, not even Rover or their dealers!
Other than the faults detailed, a brilliant car. Nice around town, capable family runabout, pretty quick too. Would like to find an owners club, if anyone knows of one?

Quick car that's comfortable and nice to drive
The alternator went + I had to replace it. Hole in petrol tank, had to replace that.
Good car, quick, especially for a 1.4, nice interior but there are some rattles. Handles OK but back end sometimes wants to kick out in wet if you're pushing it!

I own this car, the Rover 214sli (1992-93), and have been exasperated with the number of times this car heats up and nearly touches red. I have tried virtually everything, and it still heats up. The head gasket went at 54K miles, the radiator at 55K miles. I have replaced the cap, cleared out air blocks, replaced the thermostat.
Does anyone have any ideas? It is really making driving the car an unpleasant experience.

Original battery changed after 5 years.
Original centre section of exhaust changed after 5 years.
Excellent steering, handling and gearchange (very wolf in sheeps clothing type of car).
Excellent economy.
Very comfortable & roomy for front passengers, slightly cramped rear legroom.
Interior very luxurious compared to Fords and Vauxhalls.
DIY servicing very easy (cambelt change took half a day).

Cam belt snapped - should have replaced the engine.
2 head gaskets.
Brakes squeak.
I had the car for 18 months before the cam belt broke, and had no problems other than head gaskets (covered by warranty) and brakes.
I liked the car; very fast for a diesel, although the back was twitchy on corners.
Dealers were very poor. Each time I had it serviced at a main dealer, when I collected it, there were new head gaskets and front brakes (disks and pads). I have never had a car that goes through disks in 10K.
Once the cam belt broke, should have put a complete new engine in. Had no end of problems after that...

Water Pump leak, replaced after 108,000 miles, no further problems.
Parts can be expensive but are easily available and delivery is usually prompt. For a diesel it's damn quick and could tow a house!!

Suspension drop link failed MOT. Centre pipe on exhaust started blowing - known problem. Back box baffles blown out - sounds ok and passed mot though.
Good performance but spares a little bit pricy (honda engine).

216, honda lump, therefore PGMFi, I reckon it's the EICV valve, I had this problem on my 2.7 with the same injection system, look at the ECU (probably under the drivers seat) with the ignition on, is it flashing a fault code at all?
