1990 SAAB 9000 Carlsson 2.0 turbo

Summary:

Parts are dear, but look after it and it will last forever

Faults:

Most of the problems have to do with neglect by previous owners - not huge neglect, and certainly not a reflection on the car itself.

The braking fluid pipes (braided) under the car need replacing.

Gearbox needs rebuild (whine through the gears)

ABS sensors need replacing.

Calipers need replacing.

General Comments:

This car is built like a tank, but goes like stink! It's somewhat pedestrian in terms of performance below 50 m.p.h., but once you crank it up the performance and g-forces are breathtaking. It's like a drug!

This is an incredibly solid car, and the design is timeless. It is also one of the most comfortable cars I've been in - after a long journey you still feel fresh. As someone who suffers a dodgy back, I find the seats supportive in all the right places.

In conclusion, this is a British Touring Car Saab that left the track and made it to a showroom! I love it to bits.

A good car, I would buy another

Faults:

Direct Ignition packed up suddenly. Cost £177 and 10 minutes to fix.

Air con pump seized recently car still runs fine after the belt was taken off,but I have to use climate control in economy mode or computer tells engine to tick over at 1200 rpm.

All the electrics still work and it has passed every mot in the last eight years with minimal problems.

General Comments:

A quick car that will outpace most others.

Handling is sometimes fun due to it being front wheel drive and turbocharged. BE CAREFUL OR IT WILL SCARE YOU!

1990 SAAB 9000 CD Turbo limited 2.3 Twin turbo

Summary:

Gotta love it

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with this vehicle. It has started right up every day and I have never replaced anything.

General Comments:

This was one of very few CD limited edtions sold in Europe and it has not one, but two high pressure turbos. I have been able to top out the car at about 160 mph. The 0-60 mph is about 6 seconds. It is much faster than my 1987 535i BMW which is now my wife's car. the Saab is far more comfortable and has much more room to move around inside. Love it!!!

1990 SAAB 9000 CDi 2.0 16v

Summary:

Big solid reliable car that swallows high mileages effortlessly

Faults:

Not much considering I have done 135,000 miles in it in 4 years.

Original engine remains in good shape.

Tyres have been my main expense.

I have had 5 major services over the 4 years (a bit naughty there) and have spent about 1200 pounds in repairs in total - I took the car to an independent SAAB specialist who was far more effecient and much cheaper than the main dealer. Many replacement parts sourced from scrap yards etc to save money.

Electrics went a bit dodgy recently but managed to rewire it and repair it with bits from a scrap yard myself.

Only problem I couldn't resolve cheaply was that little light that comes on when you are sitting on the front seats without your seat belt - gave up when I got the main dealer costing to sort it out.

General Comments:

This is the best built car I have ever owned and swallows high mileages effortlessly, with incredible mechanical reliability. Right up to 210,000 miles the car has not once let me down.

My dealer told me that the basic models with manual transmission are the most reliable. Turbo + auto boxes on these cars are to be avoided.
