1999 Seat Toledo TDiSE 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

I highly recommend the car

Faults:

Inside left door handle material worn.

Bootlid had to be reset, as when being opened or closed, it would scrape paint off the bumper.

Front brake discs have had to be changed twice.

The paint gets chipped badly from motorway driving.

General Comments:

The car has now done 82,000 miles and has always been totally reliable.

The cabin is well laid out. Very comfortable driving position. Lovely leather steering wheel.

The Toledo handles well and is extremely economical with the diesel engine. Plenty of pulling power for overtaking and for climbing steep hills.

The car is extremely good looking. So many people pass pleasant comments about my car. In dark " Indigo " blue it really looks lovely.

I carry very large musical instruments in the car's enormous boot.

My Toledo has an amazing number of very useful extras.

An example of a few of the many extras:

Heated mirrors inside and out, self moving mirrors, climate control, ESP traction control, ABS breaking, a wonderful 6 CD-autochanger with eight speakers.

I have always had excellent efficient service from my local main Seat dealer.

1999 Seat Toledo SE 1.8 20V

Summary:

Very cheap Audi/VW, but without the dealer service

Faults:

Cruise control has never worked properly for more than a month.

Gear box has been replaced twice. Firstly because the engine mount fell off which damaged the gearbox and then the replacement had a fault with second gear.

Brake discs warp very easily, I'm currently on my third pair.

Locks itself occasionally.

General Comments:

Otherwise, a lovely car to drive when it's working. I am sure not all Toledo's have been as bad as mine.

The locks itself business is not a fault. All VW / Audi's do this. Its to stop tw*ts with scanners getting past the immobilizer. Also a good security point... if you unlock it and then don't get in it locks itself again!!

I have owned a Seat Toledo TdiSE since the very end of September 1999. I have been very lucky, as my car has been 100% reliable. It has now done almost 37.000 miles and it runs fabulously. I have had fantastic service from the local main dealer. It is wonderful to drive, also so smooth and quiet, particularly on motorways. I carry a full-sized cello in a large hard case easily in the boot. Very few cars can carry my cello in the boot. The diesel engine is incredibly economical. The Belgium build quality on my car is top rate. There is no rattle or even a squeak after almost 37.000 miles. I intend to keep this car and do a really big mileage. I deliberately get an oil change every 5000 miles instead of the stipulated 10.000 miles, as oil needs changing more often, as it doesn't last as well as or as long as people say.

I am really sorry to hear of your reader having bad luck. I hope his luck changes. With every model of car there are bad ones occasionally produced. It doesn't help his case though, I am sorry.

If I was to get another car, I would get another dark blue Toledo.

Herbert Hall.

1999 Seat Toledo V5 2.3

Summary:

Buy one, it's going to be a classic

Faults:

Only problem was with the immobilizer which went bonkers a couple of weeks after I got the car and wouldn't let the car start at various intervals of its own choice.

The dealer had about 5 goes at fixing it and in the end a nasty letter to SEAT Headquarters got the problem rectified. Fault was traced to the ignition barrel key code reader.

General Comments:

Drives absolutely spot on - refined and quite sporty when needed to be. Performance pretty good but really needs the 20 valve V5 which has just come out. Why pay £20K for an A3 1.8T when the Toledo V5 has tons more equipment at 2/3rds of the price?
