1998 Subaru Legacy 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Feels like it's made by Airfix

Faults:

Bushes crankshaft oil seal.

General Comments:

Mechanical problems aside, I have never drove such a nasty car in my 15 years of driving, and I have had french cars.

The parts are more expensive than most German cars, and the comfort and quality is nowhere near the German cars.

You say the parts cost more than German cars. Keep in mind, a German car is a domestic and a Subaru is an import for Europeans. Also, what parts have you needed to buy within 1500 miles?

It's sounds like you hate it with a passion, but you just say it feels "Nasty"... Please explain... Did someone trash it before you got it, so it's gross inside and out, or is it cheap (construction) to you? I have no love for German cars such as VW's, but I can explain my reasons. Please explain yours if you could..

Just saying a car sucks without saying why, helps no one...

1998 Subaru Legacy LX + 2.0

Faults:

Nil.

General Comments:

Good; taut and responsive to drive, and corners confidently. Car is very quiet. It will climb a spiralling, snow-bound driveway without so much as a side-slip. Gear changing is not as sweet as it should be. The clutch pedal could do with a shorter travel. Steering wheel adjustment is a bit pointless, as anyone over 4 feet tall needs maximum height, and anyone under 4 feet couldn't see over it anyway. The seating is poor--considering the price of the vehicle--but the accessibility of serviced components and the general performance make up for this. It is a tough and resilient car with an incredible combination of low-speed torque and high revs. Its popular acclaim is well-deserved.

Why the sad blue face? I'm assuming it was a mistake?

1998 Subaru Legacy 4 Cam Estate 2.5 petrol

Summary:

Roomy high performance estate

Faults:

No major faults to date.

Occasional power loss during the running in period. No fault found. No recurance.

The front brake discs were replaced by the dealer at the first service - no reason given.

The cigar lighter failed due to an electrical connection becoming detached.

Infra red remote door locking which should work at 2m from car now only works when the transmitter is up against the car window - very irritating. Dealer could find no fault!

General Comments:

This car is comfortable, performs and handles well and has a cavernous loading area. Good on motorways and minor roads alike. No bad habits.

Petrol consumption is good for the engine size in my opinion (30-35mpg).

High cost of ownership due to massive depreciation, high insurance rating and service interval of 7500mls/6 months. Typical service £150 for little more than an oil change.

1998 Subaru Legacy GTB 2.0 twin turbo

Summary:

Buy one

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

The performance bargain of the decade. 280 bhp from a family estate car with looks that don't get you noticed. They also allow you to relax and enjoy the driving experience.

1998 Subaru Legacy GTB-ltd Estate 2.0 twin turbo petrol

Faults:

Tyre failure @ 6,000 miles.

General Comments:

Bridgestone said I damaged the tyre for it to fail, but I know I never hit anything.

I think it failed because the car is a grey import and the tyres were not good enough for British roads.

A damaged tyre is hardly the fault of the car? All Subaru's are well made and built to last. They're next in line to Toyota for build quality.
