1992 Toyota Celica GT4 Carlos Sainz 2.0 turbo

Summary:

This car delivers so much for so little money

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong at all.

General Comments:

This car is reliable, smooth and quiet.

It can return good MPG if driven carefully. Performance is excellent.

The car is equipped with all the driver luxuries you need as a driver, which is why this is my everyday car.

The car even comes with a 6 speaker CD/Radio/Cassette as standard. Air-con and electric tilt/slide sunroof.

1992 Toyota Celica GT4 2.0 16v turbo 4x4

Summary:

Massive G Force Fast Car

Faults:

Manifold Bolts had broken, had to get them replaced.

The Clutch needs replacing.

Rocket Gasket was worn, and leaking oil.

Problem with both rear brake drums, needs professional attention.

Power Steering Fluid Leaking.

Drivers seat has worn hole on the arm.

Rattles / vibrations from beneath the car.

General Comments:

Apart from the problems, I have regret buying this car. It is very fast, it does 0-60 in about 6 seconds, has 201 brake horse power standard, and can hit 150mph. No bad turbo lag, if you change gear quick you are gone, the torque is great in 3rd/4th gear. Not many common cars on the road come near the acceleration. Being 4 wheel drive also helps, hardly any wheel spin, if any occurs. Quite a bit of G Force if you get a good rev, and lift the clutch up fast!

It really is a head turner, everyone is always looking around, it's nice to have a dump valve to increase the looks. The bonnet looks great, very different, the bonnet scoop moulds into the bonnet, the whole car has that well known Rally look.

This model celica (ST185) looks best in Red, in my opinion, in really brings out the style and scoop/vents. The Wide-arch body is the best looking which is available later on in this model (not sure when though), but it's noticeable wider!.

I recommend anyone this car, if you want fast, good looks, however be prepared that when things do go wrong, it costs quite a bit more than average to fix, but don't let that put you off buying one, its not worth it.

It has discs at the back, not drums.

The handbrake is a drum type sitting inside the rear disc.

Carlos Sainz Celica Gt4. Very reliable, clutch needs replacing and rear end skids out too often, spun out on a round about twice in 3 days.

1992 Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD Carlos Sainz 2.0 16v turbo

Summary:

High performance, though you might not notice!

Faults:

Windscreen washer pump failed for three weeks, and then magically started working again. Nothing else has ever gone wrong!

General Comments:

A very reliable, and very fast performance car.

The car crosses country quicker than any other car I've driven (bar an Impreza).

Steering feel is great, as is the feeling through the seat of how the car is behaving.

However, the sensations of driving are somewhat dulled in comparison with other performance cars (911, 205 GTi, Caterham etc). Driving is about sensations, so I'm changing it.

The other reason I'm changing it, is, whilst it is very very reliable, it's just too thirsty on fuel (22mpg and 26 on motorways), and it eats its way through a set of tyres (£400) every year, and needs servicing every 6000 miles (3 times a year for me!!!). Backstreet garages cannot cope with the complexity of the car, so this means main dealer prices.

Very comfortable and very reliable. I can think of no other car more suitable for reliable ownership to transport its driver around the country at high speed in complete comfort.

Personally, I'm going to go for something cheaper to run, that's still a lot of fun. A Mk1 MR2 is now on my wish list whilst I save for my dream car... a Caterham 7.

Brilliant from a guy whose last car was a AX GT LOL.

I have a GT-Four and I think trying to compare the handling to a 911 or Caterham is a bit harsh. The handling is good, just a little understeer, an uprated antiroll bar makes it great.

Plus the car is endlessly upgradable in engine and chassis.

And 99% of 2litre turbo engines are not complex.

Steering feel is great, very reliable, very comfortable. Let me add: solid & predictable handling, excellent braking, nice looking, powerful & torquey turbo engine, very practical liftback trunk & folding rear seat, the image of World Rally Champions. ST185 GT-Four is the best Celica ever, even though it's heavy and parts are expensive.

That's interesting about the washer fluid pump. When I bought my 91 Celica convertible off a Chevy used car lot 2 yrs. ago the only thing that didn't work (other than the A/C) was that pump. I rode around for 18 months never trying it again and had resigned myself to fixing it one of these days. Then out of the blue I tried it again and the rest as they say is history. Now if only the A/C would do the same.

1992 Toyota Celica GT-4 2.0 turbo petrol

Faults:

Bought second hand, low mileage. The turbo was clogged up and had to be cleaned out. This took the dealer nearly 3 weeks to diagnose and sort out, but at least it was under warranty. Apart from that, I have had one seized rear brake requiring a new caliper.

General Comments:

Great car. Very fast, very safe with the 4 wheel drive, great to look at and very relaxing to drive. Would recommend to anyone. My neighbour has bought one as well after seeing mine.

Can be expensive to run, only returns 25-28 mpg on motorway runs. Tyres are horrendously expensive (£150 each!).
