2000 Toyota Celica VVTLi 1.8

Summary:

Waste of money and trips to the garage

Faults:

To start with it is a great looking car, but that’s about it. At:

- 60k full service £350

- 61k miles had to get new allow wheels as the old ones were all corroded, so £650

- Pulley and belt at 62k - £240

- 2 weeks later pulley adjusted again as it was making a squeaky noise

- 65k new air sensor 250k + labor,

- 68k new pulley and belt, so again £100 + £60belt + Toyota labor charges.. + VAT + VAT for the total + VAT after the VAT of the VAT.

- 70k engine overheating, local Toyota Garage found that the water pump wasn’t working so they charged me for a new pump, and then later on they said the radiator has a hole in it so it will need replacing = a wonderful £700.

- 75k of courses fan belt noise so new pulley + belt. Old ones not covered by warranty as I gave the old parts to the garage, and since I supplied the parts they cannot give warranty…… fair enough so another £120 + £60belt. I asked for the old parts they gave me half of the old pulley. When I asked where is the rest of the part they said they put it on my car …. WTF… so I paid £120 for half of my own part ….

- After 2 weeks fan belt noise, took it back to the garage, fixed it on warranty.

- One month after fan belt noise, took it back to the garage fixed it on warranty.

- Now again fan belt noise and I will need new brakes all around, estimated at 2k by the garage..…

- The leather seat will need to be refurbished as they started to wear badly.

General Comments:

The driver uses the car to get to work and back and shopping…. (drives about 10k a year) Although a sport car is not a racing car, so it has never been raced, therefore it has been driven decently and well looked after. I rarely get it into lift mode and never drive it for more than a few seconds at over 6000 revs, also because of the juice it takes. Economy wise not very good, although comparing to other sport cars in its category (190 bhp), it's quite economical.

Overall very disappointed with Toyota reliability and ESPECIALLY the garages, …..they are absolutely disgusting, rude and a rip off.

For its own sake it never stopped working as I would probably set it on fire at the side of the road. All I can do is to regret buying it, it cost £6.5k to purchase, about the same in repairs and the value has gone down by 50%.

I agree with this review as I had similar issues on my Celica. This was not a very reliable Toyota, and I do not intend on owning one again unless they build another sports car with a comprehensive warranty.

2000 Toyota Celica Sport M 1.8 vvtl-i

Summary:

Sporty, fast, stylish and reliable!

Faults:

The engine warning light came on at about 75000km, and the engine was struggling, but was just in need of service.

Light bulb had to be changed.

Gasket cover on exhaust came loose, and made a terrible noise, but was a simple fix with a screwdriver.

Wear on drivers seat from having to fall into the car.

General Comments:

I love this car; there were only 1200 Sport M models made, so it feels unique and drives the same. I imported it from Japan with low mileage and a clean engine and interior.

The 200bhp as standard is N/A, but accelerates well until it hits 6500rpm when the vvtl-i kicks in like a mule. Would much prefer it to kick in lower; even 5000rpm would do, which I'm considering.

The car revs very high and because it's so low to the ground, has the TRD sports suspension and strengthened pillars; it feels like I'm driving a race car. The engine noise reduction was removed from the front of the car to lighten the added weight of the pillars, so it sounds beautifully loud and sporty.

If I was to complain about it, I'd probably say the seats can be uncomfortable over long journeys, and the Japanese put a mini-disc player into it, which annoys me because, it's a mini-disc player!

I wouldn't give my Celica up for the world. I've not been beaten on the roads yet; I'm not saying it's the fastest, but I've said goodbye to many a boy racer.

I've driven one Sport M here in Malaysia and yes, it really delivers more power compared to normal 6 speeds. Too bad, its hard to get 1 in good condition.

2000 Toyota Celica 1.8vvti 1.8 140bhp

Summary:

Probably the best value coupe on the market

Faults:

Tailgate struts didn't support tailgate - replaced under warranty, and now fine.

Everything else 100%

General Comments:

A head-turning car, especially with the "Premium and Sport Pack", which includes 17 inch alloys, leather interior and rear spoiler.

I love the climate control air con, and also use the electric sun roof frequently.

Performance is good, rather than great, as the engine needs to be thrashed to get the best out of it, and it is not the smoothest of units. Handling, however, is superb. The car rides very comfortably at low speeds, but is still secure when pressing on.

I think the interior looks great, though the plastics used in the dashboard and door trim are not very tough and scratch easily.

The standard Sony Disc/Tape/Radio is a fiddle to use, but works superbly.

2000 Toyota Celica 190 1.8vvt li

Summary:

A quick as you want rocket

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

If you can afford the extra money, buy the proper version of this car.

The six speed box is a delight, but the best kept secret is the engine.

Push it past 4000 rpm, and the car jumps into life.

Press the pedal past 6500 rpm, and the performance is surprising when taking into account the price of the car.

Looks drop-dead sexy in Astral Black with the big alloys and bodykit.

LOVE the interior, wipes the floor with the equivalent Alfa Romeo. Six-speed gearbox an absolute joy. Sony Radio CD Cassette very good. Dealers top-notch. Even the doors make a nice sound when shut!!!!

The Celica may be distinctive, but stylish in the vein of the Fiat Coupe, Alfa GTV and 156? - most definitely not!! These cars will be icons in 20 years time. The Celica? - nope - it's a car with looks to appeal to your average 17 year old reader of "Max Power".
