1996 Toyota Corolla GL 1.3

Summary:

Beware when buying an old car

Faults:

The carburetor was faulty.

Rust on front arches.

General Comments:

This really put me off buying another old Toyota.

When I purchased the car I was in desperate need for a cheap japanese vehicle which I paid 300 Pounds sterling.

It was all I could afford.

I noticed the Idle speed was around 1200rpm. It should have been around 750rpm. The owner told me after it warmed up it usually went down, but it never did.

The worst part was that the miles per gallon was around 18 on the motorway. I took the car in for a repair which was £80. Sadly it was still the same. As I could only afford a used carb.

I was devastated. And ended up losing the car to the crusher.

You paid 300 pounds, what did you expect? You should have had a go at fixing it yourself; they are incredibly simple and reliable if you put a little effort in.

The only thing to go wrong was the boot release cable which has either snapped or come loose.

The car has always been reliable and an excellent runner. I passed my test in the same car in 1997 and I even believe it helped me.
