1989 Toyota MR2 1.6 16v

Summary:

Eats GTi's for breakfast

Faults:

Only had the car a few months, and done 3000 miles - so not much chance of anything going wrong.

Handling in the wet was scary when I got the car - that was solved by adding a set of TOYO Proxes T1-S tyres.

The original speakers sounded a bit tinny, so I replaced them almost as soon as I got the car.

General Comments:

Bought my MR2 for a shade under £2000. Its red with 15inch 5 spoke alloys.

I have (at times) driven this car very hard and found that you have to be driving like a total maniac to get it to loose grip. Easily out-handles any car I have owned in the past.

At first I didn't think the car was as fast as I thought it should be. That was until I wound it up over 4500rpm, after that the car almost takes off.

I haven't had the car serviced or repaired yet so I can't comment on running costs, except for the fuel consumption which I recorded at 33mpg.

Right, fantastic car, great handling and speed, looks stunning, but there are a couple of annoyances:

1. I find the car a bit short on space. Although the leg and head room is good, the boot space is poor (couldn't even fit a crate of lager in it), and the door pockets can just about hold a CD.

2. Motorway journeys can get a bit of a headache. The engine is spinning around 4000rpm at 70mph.

So my summary of the car: if you want a good looking fast car with great handling, you are not bothered about boot space, and don't use motorways much, then this is the car for you.

Summary:

Looks more expensive than it is

Faults:

No faults, so far.

General Comments:

The car is pretty quick for a 1600, and sticks to the road like a limpet.

Great fun to drive, just not great on practicality as there is not much boot space and only 2 seats, but then you don't buy an MR2 to be practical.

I've had my 96 MR2 for 4 years now... drive it reasonably hard daily, but it's the 2.0l not the 1.6.

Engine revs at 70 are just over 3500, and with the radio at a comfortable level (can still speak to my passenger) the drone of the engine is masked.

Stick to 3000+ rpm and it flies.

Plus... that really tiny boot can carry over £130 worth of monthly groceries from Sainsbury's... NOT including the 2x24 crates of beer I usually add to that list!
