1991 Toyota MR2 GT 2.0 (3SGE)

Summary:

Far to comfortable for a sports car

Faults:

Radiator developed a hole due to rust.

Normal service items (e.g. filters)

General Comments:

This car is great fun to drive and extremely comfortable. Stunning to look at.

However to work on the car is a nightmare, the majority of bolts break when you try and release them. The engine bay is fairly cramped and difficult to reach into.

Changing simple items like radiators take much longer due to accessibility.

Fuels cost are not as high as expected, if required this car can return high mpg if driven lightly.

1991 Toyota MR2 Coupe 2.0 3S-FE

Summary:

How can anything this cheap be this good!

Faults:

The head gasket was replaced by previous owner at 123K miles, at a cost of ~£600.

A micro switch on drivers door lock for central locking/alarm needs replacing at cost of ~£25.

General Comments:

The car handles excellently and gives a rewarding driving experience. It can take corners much faster than my previous hatchback and the body roll seems non-existent. I've been told to watch out for the back end though!

The cabin is very comfortable and roomy. The seats hold you in very well and it provides both a relaxing and exciting drive, depending on what mood you are in.

When the car's polished it looks amazing, people just stop and stare as it drives past. It feels like a new car. It looks like a new car. I need a personal plate so people think it's a new car!

The luggage room in the boot isn't that big. However, I managed to get an entire trolley of shopping in (just about). Watch out for frozen goods as the boot gets very hot!

You definitely have to watch the back end in fast bends. As soon as the (very very limited) initial understeer appears and provided you *gently* lift off/accelerate be prepared to catch the back end. Very snappy, but very rewarding driving experience!

Hi, is the 1991 MR2 manual "non turbo and not GT", does this model have a normal 16v motor and not twin cam as in "GT"?

Regards

David.

It sounds lovely.

It's fast and handles beautifully.

It's so comfortable.

It looks like a little Ferrari when it's all washed and waxed!

1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo 2.0 GT-turbo

Summary:

Remember to drive back and collect your stomach!

Faults:

Gear Linkage went at 65,000 - not expensive to fix £200.

Tends to wonder on uneven roads - probably the wide wheels though!

Japanese import and so the speedo only reads to 100mph* which isn't very useful.

*on a private test track of course :)

General Comments:

Being only 23 years old and owning more or less a super car which has cost £4,000 to buy and £900 to insure fully comp must be the cheapest and most affordable speed under £5,000. It frequently anialates so called German sports cars and is a pretty good street sleeper/q car. Before owning it I had piled money into a hot hatch with total engine swap and modification - what a waste of money! get an MR2 Turbo and feel real cheap power that flings a huge V at anything else on the road!

I was just wondering what insurance company the 23 year old used? Is there a was to reach him? simonbell79@yahoo.co.uk.

Most UK insurers will not insure anyone under 25 on any car of this nature for any money.

Quite a number are now refusing to insure anyone under 21 to drive anything, mainly because 85% of newly qualified drivers write off a car within 6 months of passing their test.

Some companies will, I'm 20 and I got a quote for the MR2 turbo for £1000, not bad at all I thought! And that with 3 points for speeding!

I wrote the mega long thread about the SW20, MR2 Turbo.

I'm now 26 and only pay £568 a year, this is with Noel Dazely.

I'm after a RX7 next :D.

The tubby has been great and I have been using it to whizz up and down the M1 on a regular basis.

Just remember to get some good rubber, I'm running T1-R's and the performance differs a great deal. More stable at 90mph +
