2000 Toyota Yaris GLS 998

Summary:

Better than chocolates and champagne!

Faults:

Nothing! Absolutely nothing! I've never had a car that's so reliable, cheap and funky.

General Comments:

This is a winner in all departments. Nothing has gone wrong with it since I've brought it and its cheap to run. Does around 36 miles to the gallon local driving and around 55 on motorway. Mine has a cassette player and cd player so I can enjoy any music and the running is smooth. I have had three hefty gentlemen colleagues and one woman colleague all sit in the car as my passengers and drove up the steepest road in Nottingham. Yaris (as I have named her) had no problem, she chugged up without any groans or moans. Its only 1 litre and therefore cheap to run, but hey... I don't need anything bigger as it fulfills my every need... well you know... within reason!

I have a 2,000 Toyota Yaris with 112,000 kilometers and I love this car. I bought it 8 years ago with 93,000 kilometers on the odometer and I must assume the the last owner kept it well maintained as do I. This car has no rust, nor does it rattle or have any other problems whatsoever at all, and it still runs just like a brand new car. I'm a short person that's only 170cm (5 foot 7 inches tall) and have the seat all the way back so I don't know how anybody any taller than me could possible drive this car. I'm getting old and can probably can only drive another 10 years before I have to admit I can no longer drive (what a drag it is getting old) but I think my old Yaris will make it another 10 years if I continue to treat it with care.

I've bought Toyota's most of my life beginning with the Toyota Corona in 1969 and I've never had one single problem with any of them. My favorite was my 1971 Toyota Celica. Toyota claims that that car had a top speed of only 105 MPH, but I had that car up to 111 MPH with more gas pedal to push, but I was too scared to go any faster due to my fear of getting a speeding ticket so I slowed it down. I advise all who read this to go Toyota all the way because they will never let you down.

2000 Toyota Yaris GS 1.0

Summary:

Not as good as everyone makes out!

Faults:

Required a new gearbox not long after aquiring it at around 20,000 miles due to bearing whine in fifth gear at 50 MPH.

General Comments:

Economical to run for town use, noisy on the motorway and under powered. Dissapointing gear change that is clunky and crunchy. Toyota have tried to fix the gear change problem with a modification to cables and fixings. This is a known fault that spoils the car. A good gear change should be easy to design!

2000 Toyota Yaris GS 1.0 petrol

Summary:

The adverts were right, you can love it too much..

Faults:

The engine warning light has been on from about 35,000 miles. The engine is OK, must be a faulty sensor somewhere. The garage turn it off and then it reappears when the garage is just out of sight.

Both windscreen wipers have rusted at the same place so might be a design fault.

A few rattles and squeaks encouraged by the somewhat hard ride.

General Comments:

Handling better than you'd expect for such a car, engine is lacking in power, but keen to rev, nimble and quick so good around town.

The Freetronic clutchless gearbox is a boon around town and you can put it in 5th at 25mph and still be OK, so making less gearchanges.

The running costs have been exceptionally low.

2000 Toyota Yaris S 1.0 petrol

Summary:

I can't find a suitable replacement for the price.

Faults:

1 exhaust valve in cylinder 1 has burnt at 80,000 miles, causing a lack of compression. The other exhaust valve in cylinder 1 shows signs of pitting at 80,000 miles.

Stereo occasionally ignores all adjustments to volume, radio station, etc, until engine is restarted. This has happened for the whole life of the vehicle.

Driver door hinge requires regular adjustment and driver door paint seems to chip very easily.

General Comments:

This car has served me well. I bought it from new, and it has given me no real trouble in the 4 years I've owned it until now (80,000 miles - see above)

The cabin is well laid out, with lots of storage.

The instruments are very well packaged down the tunnel, which is a source of amusement for visitors, and a source of confusion whenever I am required to drive another vehicle (I find myself looking at the other car's stereo thinking "how fast am I going?")

The rear, front and side visibility is good, even for a person of small stature.

The seat and steering wheel also have sufficient adjustment to allow me to drive comfortably.

The car pulls away well, and will do any speed that I have asked of it, but the revs are always high. My partner complains that it screams.
