2001 Toyota Yaris CDX 1.3

Summary:

A great buy for the price

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

The engine only seems to be responsive over 4000 RPM. I believe this is due to the VVTi. It's a pain having to drop down to second to overtake somebody doing 40mph, but it does seem to pull extremely well when it's revving high.

Safety features are excellent - ABS, passenger airbag, 4/5 rating on NCAP safety test. This was the deciding factor for me over my other choice of car, a Rover 25.

Plenty of space inside. I'm 6'1" and have loads of head and leg room. Passengers have commented on the rear space as well.

Lots of cubby holes, pockets and drinks holders. This is one of the things I'm sure I'll miss when I get my next car!

Visibility is terrible. The headrests and rear pillars force you to use the wing mirrors more than should be necessary.

Economy is quite reasonable. I average 35-36 MPG using it around town. This is with 20 minutes of traffic each day and many roundabouts. I have been on long motorway runs and have gotten 55mpg if I do a constant 70mph, 46mpg if I do 90. Economy really seems to depend on road surface.

Gears seem unusually long for such a small car. Highest speed I've been is 118mph at approx 5000 RPM so I'm sure there was a little power left. Feels stable at any speed.

Gearchange is very stiff and notchy. There is also a real problem getting the car into reverse! You need to select neutral and disengage the clutch for 2 seconds before selecting reverse. This is a real pain if you're doing a 3 point turn or something and holding up traffic!

Lots of body roll when cornering, presumably due to the height of the car.

The digital tachometer/speedo is always a good talking point! It uses mirrors, so passengers are unable to see what speed you are doing.

Overall a great buy.

2001 Toyota Yaris SR 1.3

Summary:

The best £10K ever spent

Faults:

The vehicle has only required new wiper blades in 3 years of ownership.

Poor hydraulics for boot / hatch opening - which are starting to wear.

General Comments:

Very reliable and a pleasure to drive.

This car is seriously quick for the money and handles like it's on rails due to the Fat tyres (195) and stiffened TTE suspension.

The gear stick is attached to the gearbox by wire cables, which stretch over time and can cause poor gear changes when the vehicle is given too much rice - people in the know berate Toyota for this across all models.

2001 Toyota Yaris GS 1.3

Faults:

At present, very few things have gone wrong with this vehicle. Just the usual minor problems such as low level rattles, which is usual on all cars any way.

The dashboard, although not dirty, seems to pick up dust very easily, and it collects in the seams. But that isn't a problem more like a design error.

So generally there have been no proper problems as yet, but fingers crossed, as I plan to keep the vehicle a good few years yet.

General Comments:

The car is very fast, and could out run most bigger cars. I have had the car up to 115mph, and it sounded like there was room for more speed. (was becoming very noisy though)

The car is also very comfortable for its size, with plenty of creature comforts such as a nice big ash tray, which is surprisingly handy; I only need to empty it once a week, unlike most cars, where it was once every couple of days. It also has a brilliant radio system, which delivers superior sound through its four big speakers. It also has a good heater, and can often get too hot. The air conditioning is also the opposite.

The engine doesn't ever seem to work hard; it just quietly hums, and with its power, it's quite easy to accidentally nudge the digital display a few miles per hour over without noticing. Not a good idea though these days with the camera checks and so forth (note when I said I did 115mph, that was done on private land, and was not breaking any law).

I chose leather as an option, because it adds to the quality feel, which it has any way. The wheels are a pain to clean though, and are not that sporty looking, but it doesn't bother me, as it doesn't effect the quality or the look too much.

The engine is well put together, as with all Japanese cars, and is designed to be revved hard. They are expected to last between 100-150 thousand miles at optimum driving speed and revs, but I probably won't get that out of mine, because I don't tend to treat many of my vehicles to my best. My car at the moment is having a new wing and headlamp fitted due to hitting a lamp post, and while on the point of that, the car has an excellent safety record of over 4 stars out of 5, which for a car of this size is superb, and is good to know.

My next car will probably be another Toyota, preferably a Toyota Corolla, as the quality of my current Toyota is incredible. I paid £12,495 for mine with extras; in my book that's money well spent.

I have dramatically gone off all Fords and Mercedes, because they can't compete with a car of this caliber. Sheer brilliant Japanese ingenious.

Thank you Toyota, GREAT JOB.
