1977 Triumph Dolomite HLS 1.5

Summary:

Naff

Faults:

You name it, it won't work.

General Comments:

Bought this as a learner car for my son. Mint condition bodywork, but engine is a complete lemon. Would be a practical classic, if it ever drove.

Complete bucket of spanners.

1500 HL Overdrive. The most reliable car ever. Even with terminal problems, this car would get me home. With 140,000 miles on the clock and having never been restored, I think the 1500 HL is fantastic.

1979 Triumph Dolomite 1850HL 1.85 petrol

Summary:

The best car in the world - ever

Faults:

Water pump, and a couple of exhausts the only problems in 21 years.

General Comments:

Looks great, drives great, comfortable, fast, well built and reliable. Whyowhyowhy did they start making Rover 216's instead?....

It's an interesting car, but best in the world? Nah ;)

The Triumph Dolomite was actually succeed by the Triumph Acclaim, and eventually became the Rover 200 that followed that car. Both were typical 80's family cars, nothing special, but I don't think they were as bad as some people made them out to be.

1975 Triumph Dolomite Sprint 2.0

Faults:

Clutch, rear camshaft seal, worn carbs, some minor rusting.

General Comments:

Lucky to buy one in good condition (body wise). Mechanically in need of work due to previous owners poor maintainance. Very quick car even by today's standards. Fuel economy not so great however at 23-30MPG. Great fun to drive.

Have owned two Dolomite sprints. The first being an early 1975 model, mint condition and well looked after.

No problems absolutely fantastic until I shunted a Montego estate and we parted company. Replaced with a 1979 model in Brooklands green - beautiful condition until, the engine blew up at 70000. New engine fitted but problems with overheating, head gasket replaced twice. Constant problems with inner tyre wear. Wheel arches replaced and lower door skins replaced.

Too expensive to insure and heavy on fuel. Sold and shipped to New Zealand to classic car race -such a loss of a great classic. Loved that over-drive switch.

The SPRINT is a true 'Classic Car' and providing you pick the right example, you WILL enjoy the thrilling ride it offers... BETTER than anything 'new' you could buy (except say expensive Mitsi EVO's and WRX's that is!).

I love my '78 so much, but you have to do the decent thing and drive her as often as you can, there is nothing an old car hates more than being left laid up for a time... 10 out of 10!!!

1979 Triumph Dolomite HL 1.5

Faults:

Clutch, 1st/2nd gear synchro hubs, steering rack.

General Comments:

Solid and fairly reliable, relatively cheap to run. Seats are incredibly comfortable, both front and rear, and interior is pleasantly upmarket. Very light (unassisted) steering. A little rust-prone, but engine's still going after 102K without fault. Rather prone to eating synchromesh.
