1998 Vauxhall Astra LS 2.0 DTi

Summary:

One of the best cars I have owned

Faults:

Absolutly NOTHING.

General Comments:

I am so pleased with this car that I don't want to part with it, even for a new one.

The ride is very good and it is very quiet inside for a diesel car.

The bodywork has stayed immaculate with regular washing. As it is diesel and an estate car, it is not a boy racer's dream, but they are morons anyway.

1998 Vauxhall Astra LS 1.4 16v

Summary:

Unexciting but easy to live with and economical to run

Faults:

Alternator belt tensioner broke clean off (bolts snapped) - fortunately the car was still under warranty (just).

Central locking broke at two years old (£60 to fix).

Other than this, no other problems (although those two are hardly little niggles!). If it weren't for those two problems then it would have 10/10 for reliability as it has never had engine problems/poor running/failing to start etc.

General Comments:

Very unresponsive at low revs but once past 3000 rpm then much better, and once past 4000 then accelerates very well indeed - consequence of 16v I suppose.

Quite happy with the handling. Would get a bigger engine next time so it wouldn't need to be thrashed so much and wouldn't need quite so much gear changing.

Not exciting but much better than an Escort!!

1998 Vauxhall Astra CD 1.6i 16v

Summary:

A nice, sensible, almost funky little car

Faults:

One line in the rear window heater.

Heat shield came loose (fixed free by the dealer).

General Comments:

Strange mix of a car. Bit boring looking, but with the free mudflaps looks a little low down and sporty.

Nice cruising ride, but a lot of fun when driven in a sporty way. Turning off a roundabout in second gear at full throtle is great fun!

Almost silent ride in the back, and German build quiality.

Nice stereo and general interior.

Lacks standard alloy wheels, and comes with a stingy one year warranty.

1998 Vauxhall Astra LS 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Tax efficient drive if you don't want prestige

Faults:

Steering column bush faulty (replaced).

Interior light fittings fell out (glued).

Bootspace cover fixings are not robust enough for constant removal, and the cogs on the ratchet have broken.

General Comments:

Good economical fast cheap company car. Gets a bit tiring on long journeys day after day due to the stiff suspension and seats.

High revs at high speed. Suits me, but I will buy something different next time.

1998 Vauxhall Astra Club 1.6 16v

Summary:

A commodity car; there's no satisfaction in owning one

Faults:

Some plastic covering fell off from the middle aisle of the interior.

General Comments:

The seats let the car down. They are uncomfortable and have a continuous squeeking while driving. They feel cheap and flimsy.

The car came with a far inferior spare tyre - so when I had a puncture I had to buy an expensive Michelin. I would have thought that the manufacturer could at least supply the car with five identical tyres.

1998 Vauxhall Astra Sport 1.6 16v petrol

Summary:

A big boy's toy

Faults:

21,000 miles :- rear shockers failed, put on gas shocks, made one hell of a difference to the handling.

22,000 miles:- bracket on side of engine which holds alternator and power steering pump cracked, replaced under Network Q warranty.

35,089 miles two years old:- water pump seized snapping timing belt, bent all 16 valves, cracked head, bent conrods, damaged barrels, Vauxhall paid for new engine even though out of warranty. Apparently a common problem, I know of 3 people this has happened to.

General Comments:

I thought this was a great car even though I had a lot of problems, but my local garage Reg Vardy and Vauxhall sorted everything out for me when it went wrong, that's why I bought a mark 4 version.

1998 Vauxhall Astra Sport 1.6i 16v

Summary:

Performance and reliability combined with good looks

Faults:

Central locking once stopped working, but the driver door still opened.

A Vauxhall dealer fixed it within one day.

General Comments:

A brilliant car that feels good to drive, responsive, great handling (it makes you feel confident), sexy looks (a head turner in the right colour).

This is my third Astra, I have had no real problems with any of them.

1998 Vauxhall Astra Sport 1.8 16v

Faults:

Rear brake calipers changed - brakes still squeak.

Airbag warning light fixed 3 times.

ECU problem causes fan to stay on constantly and engine doesn't run properly - yet to be fixed.

General Comments:

Good handling comfortable car let down by poor reliability and crap dealer service.

1998 Vauxhall Astra Sport 1.8i 16v petrol

Faults:

Front speaker crackled from new, took 3 attempts by main dealer before it was fixed.

Front drivers seat creaks when cornering.

Rear brake drag, causing excess heat in pads, Vauxhall allows you to drive the car with faulty brakes. After 2 attempts, Vauxhall dealer changed rear brake calipers, known fault.

Engine cam speed sensor faulty at 10K miles.

General Comments:

A good car, with bad dealer backup, and appalling quality control. Slowly getting all problems fixed. After 7 months from new, 8 trips to the garage and 20K miles.

1998 Vauxhall Astra Club 1.6 petrol

Faults:

1. Recalled for steering.

2. Problems with the dash lights.

3. Brakes replaced (all round).

General Comments:

Not a bad car at all. A few teething problems (all covered by warranty).

Looks very good, though as far as performance goes, it is a bit of a sheep in wolf's clothing (would get 16v next time).

Vast improvement on old style.
