1990 Vauxhall Cavalier L 1.6i

Summary:

Cheap, quick transport

Faults:

Camshaft at 138k.

Suspension arm (due to a large hole in the road).

General Comments:

The Cavalier is so taken the Michael out of, yet we have just the L trim, and we have a sunroof, central locking, auto box which is quick and packets of legroom.

The car is not the fastest, but 110mph for a car of 13 years can't be bad can it?? It only cost £100 and still we have people saying it was a bargain - when it goes I will be getting a 2.0/2.5 CD model I reckon...

1990 Vauxhall Cavalier L 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Haven't had a moment's trouble

Faults:

Brake shoe (rear left) needed replacing at 120 000 miles.

Smoke appeared in the cabin once. This was unsettling, but never occurred again.

General servicing has found faults, nothing unexpected for a family saloon.

General Comments:

This was my dad's car, and my grandparents kindly stumped up the money for me to be insured on it for a year.

I haven't had a moment's trouble out of it. It's always started when the key turns, and that's something that none of my mates can say. I've taken it around the UK on various road trips and have never had to worry about breaking down or other misadventure.

Driving is relaxing and yet invigorating at the same time, as only a good car can be. Power is there when you need it, as long as you have the right gear (try to stay out of 5th if you can.)

The turning circle is too wide to be practical on Britain's narrow streets.

The oddly heightened rear end has created visibility problems when reverse parking. I have to go by dead reckoning sometimes.

Fuel economy is reasonable, at a steady 35 mpg on the road, and probably 25-30 in town. Fuel economy is important in Britain, as we pay ridiculously high duty on petrol.

The car has no resale value now (who would buy a J-reg Cavalier with 130,000 miles on the clock?) but our family will love it forever.

I agree with everything you said in your review. I had the smoke in the cabin on mine too, a common problem with all vauxhall's of this age not just the cavalier, as I had the same problem with an astra. The smoke was the ignition switch shorting out. It smoked a few intermittent times before I decided to replace it, which is very easy quick and cheap to do after which I had no more trouble even to this day.

1990 Vauxhall Cavalier GL 2.0

Summary:

A quick high performance bargain

Faults:

I'm 22 and had the car for 3 years now. I got the car when it was 11 years old and had 97,000 mile on the clock. Since then I have covered up to 113,000 mile, which is not much.

Only usual wear and tear stuff has gone since I got it, back in September 2000. The battery needed replacing at 99,898 miles because it would not start one morning and that's the only time it has let me down.

General Comments:

I have just bought some new parts the other day and plan fitting these. I have bought new brake pads, brake disc's, oil filter, air filter, new spark plugs. All the basic stuff that goes wrong. I also plan to change the timing belt before Christmas.

The car handles and drives fantastic.

The performance is great as it is capable of 125mph without any problems, but then becomes a little thirsty.

1990 Vauxhall Cavalier L 1.6

Summary:

Plain Jane, but no pain

Faults:

Alternator packed up after driving through a deceptive puddle.

Disc's and pads after a 14hour round trip to Glasgow.

Rear number plate bulb.

Welding on sills after approx 120,000.

Head Gasket at 138,000.

General Comments:

This was my first car after passing my test, I had decided on getting a largish car so I could get used to driving something bigger.

I had been driving it for 5yrs with no great respect for looking after it. (I only changed the oil twice). It however never really let me down and continued to plod on in all weather.

My main problems have been how it got repeatedly targeted by people cutting my fuel line and breaking in to try and steal anything inside.

My head gasket finally went at 138,000 miles and I was just waiting for my next pay day when someone kindly decided to try and hot-wire it, because it wouldn't run, they decided to trash the inside entirely. I had to scrap it at this point which left me devastated.

I am now searching for another one to buy and would fully recommend the indestructible Cavalier.

PS. I will look after my next one better.
