1997 Vauxhall Corsa Sting 1.0 12v

Summary:

Nippy Comfortable and Economic

Faults:

The alarm that was with the car when I bought it did not work, but was just a case of replacing it. The problem was with the remote piece in the end.

General Comments:

This car accelerates a lot faster than expected. The engine size is also given justice my its fantastic fuel economy.

The controls are easily accessible from the drivers position.

The car is very spacious to say it's a small compact thing, which in turn makes the car very easy to park.

1997 Vauxhall Corsa LS 1.2i 8v

Summary:

A cheap, economical town car

Faults:

The inlet gasket began to leak at 15,000 miles. Relatively simple problem to repair costing £20. The main dealer quoted £100+ Vat.

Water leaked into cabin through wiring harness, preventing the correct operation of the fuel pump relay and resulting the car not starting. The car was off the road for 2 weeks while the fault was traced. Failure was caused by contamination of a multi-pin connector near the engine management unit.

Approx 12 months later water caused contamination of the crank angle sensor connector resulting in the car not starting. The car was off the road for a further 3 - 4 days while the fault was traced.

General Comments:

A very cheap and economical car to run.

The cabin is very simple with bare minimum controls and "toys" but what more do you expect from a basic car.

Despite 3 weeks off the road due to electrical faults I'd still recommend one as they're relatively simple to work on.

1997 Vauxhall Corsa premier 1.2i petrol

Summary:

Nice car, good little runaround and fun to drive

Faults:

My fan belt started to slip at 74,000 miles and had to be replaced.

Steering is very heavy.

Brakes are a little poor, but still stop the car fine.

General Comments:

This car is very sluggish with not a lot of power. However on my model I added a new stainless steel Ashly competition exhaust along with a piper-cross air filter. Now its fairly quick and does speeds of 110mph+.

The cars standard sound system really lacks sound quality and the speakers don't like it when you raise the bass. I fitted a Kenwood head unit along with two Sony 6x9 speakers which I mounted on the rear shelf. Now theres enough sound quality and bass to blow out anyones ear drums.

1997 Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Sport 16v

Summary:

Good and bad

Faults:

Head Gasket blew at 53000 miles -(apparently a common problem (Luckly under dealer warranty!) I've only had it 6 months though.

General Comments:

The car feels different Every time I drive it. Sometimes the gear change is smooth and the engine is smooth and other times it feels like a bag of spanners! (Noisy , jerky and stiff gear change) This is the second corsa that has felt like this!

Very quick though for a 1.4...This car is a brilliant 1st car and will keep up with cars of a bigger engine size with a 0-60 of 10.5 seconds and is only group 5 insurance.

My girlfriends 1.3 fiesta handles better though :o (

This review is helpful. Especially pointing out head gasket problems. I have a 1996 Corsa sport and head gasket has gone more than once. Also had many cam belt problems. However how anyone could right a 1.3 fiesta handles better is beyond me. I must admit I have put on larger and wider alloys, but please a fiesta 1.3? I don't think so!

Very helpful... my 1.4 Corsa also varies in drive style/quality...thought was me being dumb!!

Occassionally drags in second to third when giving it some, but no complaints otherwise.
