1999 Vauxhall Omega MV6 3.0

Summary:

The best all round car I have ever had

Faults:

A slight problem with the front passenger electric window; however I will get this sorted soon.

Other than that, this car is fabulous. It was a one owner car until I purchased it. Whatever needed to be done, was done!

General Comments:

This is the second 3.0 V6 manual Omega I have owned. The previous was a facelift X'reg.

They are a heavy cars, which need respect. They will very easily throw you into a wall if you push them too hard. It may only be 3000cc, but there is a fair bit of weight to move, and it needs careful handling if you have not driven such a car before.

Handling is steady and secure, however you are aware of the weight of this car. It will, however, make other so-called "fast" cars look very silly.

The Omega can do everything; comfortable long distance cruiser, country road sprinter and a car to race away from the the traffic lights!

I paid £5000 for my first one, and £2000 for my current one. By far the best cars I have ever had. Can't say much more.

1999 Vauxhall Omega CDX 2.5 V6

Summary:

Very comfortable cruiser

Faults:

I bought the car of a dealer, and within 1 week the water pump failed. The dealer very kindly paid for a new pump, and I then got the garage to replace and service the car.

Rocker gaskets failed as they all do; really easy to do, don't be put off when looking at the engine as any DIY bloke can do it. You can get the special sockets in any Halfords store at around £8.00, so go ahead.

Changed the HT leads £25 a bank, changed the plugs for £1.25 each, gaskets (£30 the pair), o-rings that are on the manifold (£3.00), and did the job in around 3 hours of stop start work, with plenty of cups of tea.

Another fault with these are the DIS pack failing; again the part cost £75, and had the job done in 1.5 hours. These are luxury cars at really silly money, that glide you along, and as with any car they need to be looked after.

I have another 2.0 litre version 16v that never misses a beat, starts every time, and has been around the world 6 times!! 165.000 miles! On a P registration. Sure there is the odd patch of rust, but nothing that these cars aren't known for (top of door, and rear wheel arches etc).

Other common faults are stalling on the 2.0 litre; again a common fault on all Vauxhalls, and very easily fixed about £30.00!

Front wear on the tyre's will be uneven ie they toe in or out as the suspension wears on older cars, causing movement in the tracking. Source your parts on the Internet, ie Autovaux, and do not go to main dealers as they will rip you off!! and are not interested.

Parts in the scrap yard may be hard to find, as most Omegas are still running around! What does that say about them then?

General Comments:

V6's are smooth and fast.

2.0 litres are good all rounders.

Large boot for luggage, and inside the cabin will fit 4 adults with ease in comfort. Very comfortable; like driving around in your lounge. Quiet and faster than some.

Not the best handling car in the bends, but you don't get boy racers buying these.

1999 Vauxhall Omega CD 2.5 V6

Summary:

Bad......

Faults:

Where do I start?

Water valve (£130).

Failed MOT (wishbone, brakes, tyre - ~£230).

Crankshaft sensor (£230), then loss of power - found to be high tension leads, coil pack and rocker/cam seals were leaking oil (£860 with new sparks).

Failed 2nd MOT - Coil springs and emissions (£185), then the piste de resistance - timing belt snapped today.

Owned for 18 months - spent over £1600 - plus now there's cost of fixing it after the cam belt snapped (estimated to be around £2k). Barely travelled 8000 since I have had it - and the cam belt was changed at 57k (it's done 79k now).

Oh, and when it was running - the petrol gauge dropped faster than if I had pushed the car off a cliff.

Would I buy another one - this is a tough one...

General Comments:

Do not buy one.
