1987 Volkswagen Golf c 1.3 4 speed

Summary:

All you could want from a 1.3 VW reliability!!

Faults:

Nothing much really! the rear windows kept dropping down so I propped them up 'permanent'! Car ran poorly on winter mornings due to 'carb icing' not really a big issue.

General Comments:

This was my first car and I was more than happy with it. My brother owned this car for 5 years previous to me and then I used it for 2 more years.

The 1.3 8v engine isn't the quickest, but with a little persuasion is surprisingly nippy. I added a kn filter and free flowing exhaust which made it run a lot better, kept up with loads bigger engined cars with ease. Apart from regular servicing no other costs. The car never let me down and for a nearly 19 year old car ran beautifully. Rust was virtually non existent apart from a few spots near the front doors. Parts are easily available and the car still has retro, but desirable looks and can use gti parts. such a strong car my bro had a rear end shunt in it from a lorry which would have wiped out most cars, the golf is a tank! no power steering means its heavy, but great feedback from the road.

1987 Volkswagen Golf GL 1.8

Summary:

A great looking, solidly built town car

Faults:

I had the usual Solex 2e2 carburettor problems (slow/fast idle, cut out…), eventually I found a knowledgeable and patient mechanic (expensive, but worth it) …

Radiator leaks (replaced), metal coolant pipe developed a hole.

Exhaust boxes replaced.

Switch problems; full beam indicator light malfunction –dashboard indicator light was fitted (this was so bright it constituted a hazard to myself) ; the windscreen water pump is also operated from a dashboard switch.

Heater director cable and rear windscreen wash not working.

One window stuck, one door handle replaced.

General Comments:

Used as a second car, I have done 34,000 miles in eight years. Auto box (3 speed) means it’s a great town and short journey car; however kick down only works up to about 40-45 mph, which is annoying. Haven’t changed the auto fluid- top up only (when do I need to change?)

Lack of power steering is a problem for my wife.

Despite the above wear and tear, this car is built to last. Looks very handsome in it’s diamond silver paintwork and pepper pot alloys. A GTI grille adds character.

After spending money on repairs in the last two years, I won’t sell the car as I like it and it’s not worth a lot. However, it should keep me going for another few years yet.

1987 Volkswagen Golf gti16v 1.8

Summary:

Best hot hatch ever

Faults:

Oil sender switch leaked oil.

Fuel pump relay broke.

Cam chain rattled badly.

Drivers seat has worn.

Speedo cable snapped.

Dreaded rear calipers ceased.

Limited rust on rear arches.

Heater matrix blew.

General Comments:

I bought this car from a sleazy back street garage for £450. The Golf struggled to start and leaked more oil than it used petrol. As I drove off I could see the mechanics laughing to each other thinking they'd got the better of me.

However after a closer inspection the oil leak was traced to a faulty oil pressure switch (replaced for just £3) and the starting problems to a blown lift pump relay (another £3).

Wow what a car! I used to own a 8v Gti and thought it was quick, but this was in a different league. Thankfully the suspension and brakes were also up to the task.

I would not recommend this car as a motorway cruiser. Its way too loud, the gearing is too low (4000rpm - 80mph), and the ride/seats too harsh.

This is a b-road machine, little can keep up with it in the country lanes.

Unfortunately mine got stolen and used in an armed robbery. Apparently my old Golf out-run several t5 volvo's during a city wide police chase and was only halted by a stinger! Look out for it on Police Camera Action or whatever.
