1987 Volkswagen Golf CL 1.6

Summary:

German reliability

Faults:

Carburettor is completely knackered. Works great in the summer, but in the winter ill idle at 3000rpm.

Also leaks.

General Comments:

My parents have had this car since new and it has been very reliable. Carb always been a problem - needs a new one. Not worth the money though any more.

Quite quick when the engine is warm, the acceleration impresses me when I really gun it but that is rare because it uses so much fuel anyway!

Due to carb problems pretty uneconomical. Managed 36MPG in the summer though.

Not particularly comfortable, but good for tall drivers like me. Commands high used prices due to its image so I'd look elsewhere for no-frills transport.

1987 Volkswagen Golf L 1.3

Summary:

Good reliability and low insurance group

Faults:

Not a lot has gone wrong although it leaks really badly.

Every morning there is lots of water on the inside of the windows - a seal broken somewhere but I cannot locate the problem.

General Comments:

Pretty good overall.

I wish I'd gone for something with a little more pep, but a good car if you want something cheap to run and insure which feels solid.

I added a Janspeed exhaust to give it more vroom.

1987 Volkswagen Golf C 1.3

Summary:

Good quality car but too heavy for a 1.3

Faults:

Nothing much.

General Comments:

This car looks OK although it is very heavy and the 1.3 engine is not powerful enough for it. This one only has the 4 gears, so cruising at 70 is done around 4000rpm... very comfortable and strong though. I would recommend at least a 1.6 for a mk2 golf.

It has been reliable and the dealer seems OK.

The Golf is a great car... trust me, I used to own a black 4 speed 1.3c Golf. Yes it was a bit slow, but a 1.6 or a 1.8 GTi lump will slot straight in with only minor mods.

Mine had zero rust and cost only 200 quid... wish I'd never sold it. Do a few mods and you'll be chuffed...

1987 Volkswagen Golf C 1.3

Summary:

Well built, reliable and good looking

Faults:

Heater matrix needed replacing, suspected when bought due to leaking in passenger side floor.

General Comments:

Very firm, solid and reliable car. Looks good, drives smoothly.

Pedals heavy, 5 gear model more economical, not that quick due to weight, need to drive it hard to get any kind of performance.

1987 Volkswagen Golf GTi 16v 1.8 16v petrol

Faults:

4/10 due to car now getting old;

Rear calipers seized (common problem).

Front bushes.

Exhaust manifold cracked.

Rocker cover gasket (fuel injection off job).

Rear lockwiper seized due to suck back of road dirt.

Trip computer sensors all crap.

Gearbox v. notchy.

Electric seats jammed.

General Comments:

Brilliant looking, fast as ...., and handles beautifully if lowered.

FSH is needed if you are buying one.

8v models are slow in comparison though insurance is much more on the 16v (group 15).

RECOMMENDED VERY MUCH Fun Factor 10/10.

1987 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 diesel

Faults:

Water on the floor of passenger side - caused by mechanic forgetting to replace some grommets in the engine compartment.

Sunroof handle fell off - too much abuse.

Back door locks getting stuck - replaced them.

General Comments:

Comfortable - especially for a tall chap, load of room for "stuff".

Pedals have lots of travel, especially the clutch - gives a good leg workout in traffic !

Reliable, a good work horse, but I prefer a bike (GSXR 1100) for fun !
