2000 Volkswagen Golf V5 2.3

Summary:

Expensive, but classy comfortable car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with it, I'm pleased to say! (I should think not for the price.)

Slight niggles: Reverse gear has a tendency to be a bit sticky when starting from cold. Sometimes does not want to go in.

Hatch door needs a good hard shove, almost a slam, to close it. Often the display tells me it is open when I think it's closed! This is one of its few design faults in my view and ought to be addressed by Volkswagen.

General Comments:

Good acceleration to get you past slowcoaches. The 2.3L engine gives that extra boost. Miles per gallon not too bad, considering engine size. The 6-CD changer in boot is a boon. The cup holders make me laugh when they pop out! Car feels safe and has good road-holding.

Warning: Have had the 'V5' chrome logo pinched off the radiator grille once already, costs £11 approx. to replace. Dealer said people take them to put on inferior Golf models! (Seems rather pointless.)

I believe dealers have reduced their prices now due to the new shape Golf pending.

2000 Volkswagen Golf GTi 1.8 20v turbo

Summary:

Solid performance with scope for improvement

Faults:

Seats shown wear on bolsters which are oversized due to being Recaros, and tilt handle coming off.

Rear light lenses misting up.

Drivers door dropped slightly causing damage to paint work.

Car has been in 6 times for these simple faults. All under warranty.

General Comments:

Despite having terrible problems with my previous Golf GTI (non turbo) I love this car.

It needs to be lowered and have stiffer suspension and the engine is crying out for a performance upgrade, Its near silent inside and the build quality is superb.

I would definitely buy another Golf, the only downside is the dealers.

The office staff are OK, but the technicians seem to be little more than semi-trained apes who can never fix the slightest of faults 1st time.

2000 Volkswagen Golf GTi 1.8 turbo 20 valve

Summary:

Not cheap to own or insure, but worth every penny

Faults:

The vanity mirror light stays on all the time.

General Comments:

Smooth effortless acceleration, holds the road well and not at all tiring to drive.

Superb radio/CD player and quality interior except the carpets which are thin, poor quality and the driver's side has worn badly in just over a year. I have tried to buy good quality replacements but have had no luck and have resorted to rubber mats!

The back of the car gets exceptionally dirty in wet weather, would fitting mud flaps and/or a roof spoiler cure this problem?

It's very easy to park.

2000 Volkswagen Golf GTi Turbo 1.8 turbo

Summary:

A nice looking rattle machine

Faults:

From day one this car has rattled. Rattles in all four doors, sunroof, centre console and now rattles in the boot area. Very poor quality in workmanship.

This car has been to the dealer 10/15 times in under 2 years and their comments are that cars do rattle. They always take the car in, which stops the rattles for a few miles, then they start again.

Both front seats also squeak when going around any bends.

General Comments:

Car looks fantastic, seems quicker to 0-60 than VW figures.

Not bad, not as quick as could be. thank god for hybrid turbo's.

2000 Volkswagen Golf GT TDI 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Fantastic... anyone selling one?

Faults:

Something weird with the driver's door, it was quite noisy and would occasionally leak if water got into the seal. Seal was replaced and it was better for about a week, but then back to normal.

Other than that, no problems.

General Comments:

I loved this car and was very upset when I returned it when leaving the company.

Always had sports cars previous to this so was worried about owning a diesel. Opting for the 110bhp engine was the best move I made - great performance and handling, and really quick to pick up.

Economy is brilliant, but parts and servicing from the dealer are high (but no worse than others such as Renault or Honda).

Very safe car. Just close the door and the thud tells you how solid it is. I was involved in an accident when a wagon hit the rear of the car while I was stationery. Considering the force of impact the rear bumper was intact, the rear window didn't break but the rest of the back end was seriously buckled costing £5000 to fix.

So good I have recommended it to 3 other people who all bought one too after testing it against the competition.

Can't be beaten, I am jealous every time I see one on the road!

They are very quick for diesels. I only just managed to out-run one at around 110 MPH on a deserted motorway in my Sierra 2.9!
