1999 Volkswagen Passat S 1.9 TDi

Summary:

A class above most others

Faults:

Passenger seat belt is holding occupants tight in their seat and refusing to release.

Separate radiator fan for air conditioning is noisy.

General Comments:

I love this car.

After having a succession of lower quality company cars circumstances forced me to buy my own.

I brought my Passat without hesitation and although I have only had it for a short time it has proven to be the best built, quietest, best made and generally nicest car I have ever owned.

One of my favorite features is the blue dashboard lights which I cannot understand why other manufacturers haven't picked up on yet.

I do not know much about the service costs as the car was fully serviced when I brought it, but I don't think it will be particularly cheap, so I will be looking for a Volkswagon specialist.

VW hold the rights to the blue lights design for a number of years so until their designated time is passed nobody will be rip off the design.

I have just completed 92,000 miles in it.

I still stand by the fact that it's a great car in every way.

A couple of things have gone wrong in the past year, but nothing serious and most of it was self inflicted.

I have found out that its not a good idea to hit fully grown deer at 80mph, they tend to cause a lot of damage!!!

1999 Volkswagen Passat TDi Sport Estate 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

A good car let down by indifferent dealers

Faults:

Engine management warning - loose connection.

Seat belt not retracting.

Failure of the rear wiper.

Rear wiper starts working when it wants - VW dealer unable to find the fault. VW will not talk to individuals, only refer you to the dealer who still can't find the fault!

General Comments:

Roomy motorway cruiser with good economy.

Nearest dealer 70 miles round trip away, but still will not order in parts for faults, merely investigates and then expects another visit to have the fault rectified.

5 visits due to the fault on the rear wiper which starts working without warning. Still not fixed.

I have the same problem with the rear wiper. I took it apart and found it needed lubrication. The tube that takes the water that goes through the center of the wiper was the problem. It had corroded and seized. A bit of Lube and it went fine.

1999 Volkswagen Passat T Sport 1.8

Summary:

What a load of junk and a waste of money

Faults:

At 16000 miles, the water pump was wrecked which cooked the turbo.

At 17500 miles: near the Swiss border the same happened again. After 1 1/2 days at a French Volkswagen dealership, and a very large bill.

18000 miles: Starting to use copius amounts of water again. I was able to limp home to sunny Scotland. As soon as I got home I told the dealership the full story. They could only apoligise and refund me the money which I had already paid out. The car was in the garage for 1 week, then I got a phone call from them to say it could be picked up. When I parked up in the forecourt of the Garage to pick up the car to find that it has a flat o/s/f puncture.

General Comments:

I don't think I will be buying another Volkswagen!!!

From 1997-1999 VW waterpumps were made with plastic impellers, these were replaced with metal ones in all late 1999 models, I guess this was the reason and should of been spotted by VW.
