1989 Volkswagen Polo Match 1.0 petrol

Summary:

Sturdy and reliable but needs to lighten up and have fun!

Faults:

Glovebox lid fell off.

Small patch of rust on boot lid and bottom of driver's door.

General Comments:

The car is comfy and reliable, but the poor performance and handling is what is going to force me to change my car. The lack of a fifth gear is a big oversight for comfortable motorway cruising. Now I have uprated the brakes they are not so bad, but still require a lot pressure on the pedal. It is great for what it was designed to do, that is being cheap to run but still being comfortable and of good quality, but unfortunately that is not really what I am after.

A great car.

Petrol tank replacement.

Otherwise, no major problems after 79,000 miles.

This car's been looked after, and yes I have bought another Polo and kept the 1989 Coupe S.

1989 Volkswagen Polo C 1.1 petrol

Faults:

Car purchased with 56k on clock, I have spent a total of £800 on parts, with all the work being done by myself. I dread to think how much I would have spent if I'd had to pay someone's labour charges. Major items include; new clutch, complete set of shocks, new discs & pads, cylinder head gasket. Numerous other parts and repairs over just 8 months!

General Comments:

The basic car seems to me to be a sound design, the handling is safe if a little uninspiring. The performance is dire. The brakes work O.K.ish, but with very heavy pedal pressures. The fuel economy peaked at around 47/48 mpg, but typically, high thirties would be expected. The boot is small and has a poor rear seat lifting design.

Overall a competent but boring small car with basic good build quality that unfortunately in my experience didn't extend to the complete package.

I have now sold the car, with an empty wallet but my soul is intact.
