2002 Volkswagen Polo S 1.4 TDi
Summary:
Super economy
Faults:
Lots, but mostly wear and tear. No major problems.
Biggest issue was uneven tyre wear which required a 4 wheel alignment to fix after ruining all the tyres with excessive wear. New tyres still didn't last very long in my opinion once "fixed" and my mechanic assured me the suspension was OK.
A few electric gremlins, but nothing major.
No breakdowns, but the car failed to start one morning, not the car's fault, the original battery went dead finally after 8 years!
Rust appearing everywhere and killed it off after a failed MOT in 2015.
General Comments:
What a fantastic cost effective and reliable little car we had in the family a long time. Bought at 4 years old with low mileage.
Originally my fathers, passed on to my mother, then myself once I passed my test.
Basic Polo was nothing exciting, but I like the economy and the car was soo simple yet modern for a 2002 car.
I liked driving it, not fast but 50 mpg was a sure thing every time no matter how it was used. 1.4 TDi is a classic solid VW engine.
We miss this car a lot and it's a shame cars like this barely exist anymore. No way will a 2026 hybrid or electric car ever be as cost effective as this little diesel VW was over its 13 year life!
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes
